Babies exposed to cigarette toxins via invisible residue

Babies and young children are being exposed to toxic particles from cigarettes, even when no one is smoking nearby, a new study has found. Residue from smokers' fingers and clothes has been picked up in the systems of babies, being cared for in hospital neonatal units, as part of The University of Texas study.

In a letter to FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez, Markey and eight other senators pointed to a report by child advocacy organization First Focus, which they said found several cases of retailers advertising liquid nicotine, which is used in e-cigarettes, as candy names, breakfast cereal and other food items in what appeared to be an attempt to make the product more attractive to younger smokers or children.


Adviser to top EU court says EU cigarette law is valid

An adviser to Europe's highest court in Luxembourg on Wednesday said an EU law on cigarettes was valid, rebuffing a challenge from Philip Morris International, although the court still has to deliver a final ruling. In a majority of cases, opinions of the court advisers are reflected in the final ruling, which should follow in the coming months.

Letter: Buffalo should prohibit smoking in bus shelters

People frequently smoke in Buffalo’s bus shelters. Pregnant women and children who stand and sit in the shelters are exposed, as well as people like myself who, for health reasons, don’t wish to inhale secondhand marijuana or cigarette smoke. I also do not want the smoke blowing onto my hair and clothing, causing both to smell as though I’ve been smoking marijuana or cigarettes, [...]
