How the tobacco and vaping industries responded to the government's new tobacco control plan

Mark Pawsey MP, chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on e-cigarettes, greeted the report and said e-cigarettes had a major role to play in reducing smoking rates. “In particular I am pleased that Public Health England’s anti-smoking campaign’s will now positively reference their vaping advice, and that the government has committed to relook at relevant legislation as we exit the EU.”

Why regulating e-cigs and smokeless tobacco differently is illogical

The FDA is infamous for having regulated all “tobacco products” including all known safer alternatives such as vaping products, as their combustible counterparts. Dr. Dorothy Hatsukami, [...] sent a letter to Scott Gottlieb commending him for his openness towards harm reduction, whilst urging him to regulate tobacco products according to their risks and “support informed choice through truthful communication of risk.”

Major smoking crackdown launched as Government urges millions to switch to e-cigarettes

MINISTERS want to slash smoking rates by a quarter by 2022 by urging millions to switch to e-cigs. They aim to reduce cigarette use to just one in eight adults within five years. Under ambitious new plans, health bosses also intend to halve smoking in pregnancy from the current 10.7 per cent. Around 80,000 Brits a year – more than 200 a day - die as a result of tobacco.

Tobacco companies diversify into ‘pharmaceuticals’

Tobacco companies claim to be developing and selling merchandise to help cigarette smokers quit, but health researchers accuse the industry of trying to hook consumers on different – still dangerous – nicotine products. Writing in Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) call the industry’s push into the smoking-cessation market “the pharmaceuticalization of the tobacco industry.”
