Bishop’s Note – 2019 BCP – The Collects

Dear Friends, as we continue our examination of the 2019 BCP Service of Morning Prayer we move from the Suffrages, which I wrote about last week, to the collects.
You will remember that a “Collect” is a short prayer meant to collect our thoughts together and to set the theme for the week. We have a series of collects we can use but it is, in my mind, right to begin with the Collect of the Day taken from the previous Sunday’s worship. In a very real way the daily offices after the Sunday service are an extension of that Sunday’s worship. As the rubrics detail below, we can use the Collect of the Day or the collect listed for that specific day of the week. Personally, I prefer to use both the Collect of the Day and the Collect assigned to that specific day of the week. I’ve listed them both below the way that I prayed them this morning.

The Officiant then prays one or more of the following Collects, always beginning with the Collect of the Day (the Collect of the Sunday or Principal Feast and of any of the weekdays following, or of the Holy Day being observed), found on pages 598-640. It is traditional to pray the Collects for Peace and Grace daily. Alternatively, one may pray the Collects on a weekly rotation, using the suggestions in italics.

Proper 22
Week of the Sunday from October 2 to October 8

Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in continual godliness, that through your protection it may be free from all adversities, and devoutly serve you in good works, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Collect for Guidance Thursday

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I pray you all every blessing!
