In this edition you will find our plans for continued training...

THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

WEBSITE The first thing to bring to your attention as part of our Road to Recovery is the new website.   The sanshoukuan.com site is designed to communicate to showcase the benefits of San Shou Kuan, what we offer as an organisation and how to get involved.   If you haven't seen it lately please do browse and let us know what you think

There is second part to this site and that is the Member's Portal.  This aims to be a repository of everything you need as a member of San Shou Kuan to progress your training and development.  It is being designed with the individual member in mind.  It will contain: your syllabus requirements (forms, fixed sparring, free sparring etc); training plans and revision aids; your grading results; examiners' comments; event booking and membership details.  Everything you need to get the best out of your organisation.

The construction of this portal is well underway and it is hoped to be launched in the next couple of months.

TRAINING If you are training at one, or more, of our classes you will know that maintaining social distancing is at front of everyone's mind.  This obviously has implications for the size of the classes and what can be undertaken in each class.

Most classes are operating with restricted numbers based on available space and a lot of the class are being streamed via Zoom. (If you cannot get along to class and want to join via Zoom speak to your instructor for details.)  At class the expectations are that each student will train with limited overlap into another student's area.   Therefore at this time it is not possible to conduct paired activities such as: stretching, free sparring or fixed sparring.  As a result we are using this opportunity to enhance accuracy and quality of techniques and forms performance.   It is with this in mind that we are basing our Road to Recovery grading syllabus.

Grading Formula: 8th Graders (Beginners) to 3rd Graders

Students progressing through these grades will only be able to practice and demonstrate their forms. Therefore each grading will be based on performance of the required form only.   Fixed sparring and free sparring elements will be deferred and will need to be demonstrated and passed at the next available grading when the current restrictions are eased.

After successfully completing their forms students will be allowed to progress to next level and sit for the next grading.   Provisional grading certificates will be issued ahead of full certification on completion of the deferred elements.

For the time being these students will be able to progress two grades  further from their current grade.

Grading Formula 2nd & 1st Graders 1st Dan Black Belts

2nd Graders progressing to 1st Grade can only do their form and not their fixed or free sparring.  Both of these elements will be deferred to a later date when the current restrictions are eased.  Successful candidates can progress towards their 1st Dan.

1st Graders aiming for Black Belt - Currently you will only be able to perform forms and destruction,  your free sparring section will have to be completed at the next BB grading - assuming  restrictions have been eased.

‘Successful’ candidates will be issued a 'Provisional Black Belt Certificate'.  Students who are re-sitting their Black Belt grading may elect to use the sparring marks from their previous attempt to qualify towards a full Black Belt certificate.

1st Dan to 2nd Dan - These candidates must complete their prerequisite assessment forms ahead of any grading as per usual.  Obviously they will not be able to perform the fixed sparring elements of the lower grades in the normal manner; instead they are to demonstrate 'on their own' the defences, attacks and counter attacks for each grade.   On completion of the assessment form they will be eligible to undertake the forms and destruction elements of their grading with the free and fixed sparring deferred (as per the 1st Graders above).

Grading Formula 3rd Dan and above

These grades are very senior assessments and a significant proportion of these grades require a large amount of one on one and two on one activity for this reason it is considered inappropriate to undertake these grading at this time.   Candidates considering these gradings should complete their prerequisite assessments and be ready to grade at the first available opportunity.  We recognise that this far from ideal but in the circumstances it is best option available.

Grading Events

All gradings will be restricted with no more than six candidates at a time and no more than two assessors in the grading venue.

Once the grading dates are posted candidates will be instructed to register for the grading in advance and depending on numbers will be invited to grade at a specific time so as to limit the number of people involved at the grading.

Children will be allowed to be accompanied by one adult; but spectators will not be permitted.  There will be limited opportunities for photographs.
