New Board Member and Summer Student
Please join us in welcoming our new treasurer, Oksana Jdankina as well as our new summer student, Nic Huige!
Oksana is an accounting consultant and works with various companies to organize and streamline their financial reporting and processes. She is a first-generation immigrant and for the majority of her life lived in Eastern Europe, before finally settling in Vancouver. She is fascinated with history, old photographs, antique sewing trinkets, calligraphy, and lace. It was her interest in Belle Époque and Art Nouveau that started her obsession with Luneville embroidery and Irish Crochet, which she is still to perfect. She also loves cooking and recently started her small patio collection of herbs and lavenders to flavor her strawberry jams, teas, and sauces. When she is not glued to her stove, computer, or needles, she spends time on learning new languages, yoga, photography, skiing, diving, and backpacking.
Hello! My name is Nic Huige and I am the new Programming and Collections Assistant for the Roedde House this summer. I am a UBC student in my 4th year studying human geography with several years of experience in leadership and managerial positions at UBC and a keen interest in learning about the history of this beautiful city which I call home. I am looking forward to meeting all the rest of the members and volunteers  of Roedde House throughout the rest of my summer here, so please don’t be shy to swing by the office to say a quick hello!
Upcoming Classical and Jazz Concerts
On July 14th, the Sea and Sky Collective presents Chromaticity, featuring Joan Blackman, violin; Julia Nolan, saxophones; and Jane Hayes, piano.  All impressive musicians individually, this combination is nothing short of electrifying.  With music by Charles Koechlin, Srul Irving Glick, Jean Françaix, Marc Eychenne, and Vancouver’s own Eileen Padgett, this concert is not to be missed.

The classical concert is on July 14th at 4pm. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students, seniors and members. Show begins at 4 pm. Please arrive 15-20 minutes in advance for seat selection.

*These concert series would not be possible without the generous support of the McGrane-Pearson Endowment Fund and several private donors.*
Our Summer Jazz on the Porch series returns! June 20 will bring Paul Rushka on bass, guitarist Oliver Gannon, and Steve Kaldestad on saxophone.

Summer jazz concerts take place outdoors and are pay-what-you-wish. The concert will begin at 7pm, and you are welcome to bring your own chairs or use the chairs provided.

A small number of VIP seats are available for $15 here. These seats are super-comfy and front row! The Summer Jazz on the Porch Series is made possible thanks to a grant from the City of Vancouver, Cultural Services.

Roedde House Speaker Series
On the last Wednesday of every month, you are invited to join us for our Roedde House Speaker Series. Each event will feature up to three speakers who are experts in regional history, literature, or heritage conservation. The topics will change monthly, and there will always be something new to learn!

This month's speaker will be Richard Bergen. Richard Angelo Bergen is a PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia. He works in late medieval and renaissance literature (with an interest in gothic and fantasy), and has won 2 Canada Graduate awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, for his MA and his PhD. He has a wide range of interests, from heavy metal concept albums to devotional poetry, but his chief vein of research concerns allegory, as a genre of literature, and as a variety of interpretation. His dissertation focuses on the use of space and place in allegorical narratives, and this month's talk will deal with the setting of a Victorian allegory.

Richard's talk is titled "Psychology and Allegory for the Victorians." Robert Louis Stevenson's story about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an allegory of good and evil, but a particularly Victorian one with social as well as individual valence: one widely exposes the disrepair of Victorian London and its professional spaces.

Tickets for this event are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors, students, and members. Tickets can be purchased online by hitting the button below, or at the door. Hope to see you there!

The Year of Magical Thinking
Tomo Suru Players will be presenting The Year of Magical Thinking at Roedde House from June 11-16, 2019. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here.
