December 2020 Newsletter

Dear Friends of Roedde House,

It's officially December and we have the house decorated for a Victorian Christmas, as the Roeddes would have celebrated!

Speaking of celebrating the holiday season, tickets are still available for An Immersive Christmas Carol! Come experience the story of A Christmas Carol through the use of lights, projections, sounds, and special effects! Keep reading our Newsletter to learn more.

As we enter our last month of the year, we want to say how grateful we are for all our amazing and hard working volunteers, committee members, and board. Thank you so much for your dedication and flexibility this past year as we navigate COVID measures together.

We look forward to seeing your lovely faces in the new years!

Museum Highlight
Colbourne House
While Roedde House may be the only Victorian house museum in Downtown Vancouver, it isn't the only house museum in the City!
Another lovely example of Vancouver's preserved heritage is Colbourne House, built in 1912 and managed by the Marpole Museum and Historical Society since 1994. It o
pened to the public in 2005, and has been restored to its 1930's state. The residence is a great example of the type of working class dwelling that was built at the turn of the last century, when the neighbourhood was transitioning from a farming community to a township.

More details can be found on their website where you can learn more about Marpole's history. You can also show your support for this great piece of our heritage community by becoming a member or donating (see below):
Remebering Margaret Pauline Libbert
It is with much regret that we learned of the passing of Margaret Pauline Libbert (née Low-Beer) on October 7, 2020. She was a longtime member and supporter of Roedde House, and a good friend of Roedde House Preservation Society founder Janet Bingham. Margaret was always determined to live life to the full, maintaining an impressively active lifestyle well into her 92nd year. Her sharp intelligence, her keen sense of style, her vigorous pursuit of myriad passions and interests, and her desire to share these with friends and family will leave a lasting impression on all who knew and loved her.
Holiday Greetings
On until December 21st

A small display of original antique Christmas cards from our collection is now on display in our parlour. These cards are decorated with silk fringes, tassels and unique images with sweet and sometimes humorous messages. The tradition of sending Christmas cards was begun by a Sir Henry Cole who, working as an Assistant Keeper, was looking for a way to make the newly established Public Record Office (post office) more enticing for the general public. He commissioned the first commercially produced cards in 1843- the same year that Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol! With this in mind we have also displayed some of Dickens other books among our card display.
Jazz Series
Our next video in our Roedde House Museum's Jazz Series is live! Our monthly jazz concerts, always hosted in our historic 1893 parlour, have been on hold since COVID, but thanks to a Community Arts Grant from the City of Vancouver and donations from our jazz fans, we are able to get the series going again with online concerts for the remainder of the year. To help support our local artists and keep the series going into next year, you can donate here:
This month's performance features, Bill Coon on the guitar and Cameron Wilson on violin. We hope you enjoy this set with songs like Lazin' with Ita, Sunday Morning, and Cheek to Cheek!

Holiday Extra
Here's an interesting #roedderecipechallenge for the holidays, from the 1869 edition of Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks, read aloud by our board president Billie-Ann. This Victorian recipe is for mulled wine with eggs. Tag us on social media if you give it a try!

Ghost stories at Christmas were a once popular tradition in the Victorian Era, so we leave you with a little excerpt from Charles Dickens' "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain", read by our talented volunteer Christine Pilgrim. Enjoy!
