September 2018

Dear Friends of Roedde House,

As we say goodbye to summer, Roedde House is pleased to welcome the fall season and all it has to offer. But first, we would like to take the opportunity to thank our summer students, Tiffany and Michael, who made such a difference at the Museum this summer. Best of luck with your continued studies! We would also like to thank all our volunteers for devoting their summer afternoons to provide tours and host events. It has been an excellent summer because of you!

For the month of September, we are delighted to announce our upcoming exhibition Memories of the Future III, opening on Saturday, September 29th. Curated by Katherine Dennis, the Museum features work by Diyan Achjadi and Cindy Mochizuki. For more information about the exhibit, opening reception, and curator tour, read on below.

Coinciding with the Memories of the Future III opening, Roedde House Museum is taking part in Vancouver Culture Days on September 28, 29, and 30. Throughout the weekend, the Museum will be open to guests free of charge pr by donation. We will also hosting a Memories of the Future III opening reception on Saturday the 29th, featuring an exhibition tour from the artists and curator. Be sure to visit the House during this exciting time!

Last but not least, Roedde House has been undergoing a paint job by the City of Vancouver. So for the next week or so, please pardon our appearance as sanding, priming, and painting continues. We are very excited to see the final result!

Looking forward to seeing you this September,
Kelsey and Darcie

In response to the history and domestic setting of the Roedde House—built in 1893 and originally home to the family of Gustav Roedde, one of Vancouver’s first bookbinders—artists Diyan Achjadi and Cindy Mochizuki mark and inscribe the Roedde House Museum with reimagined narratives. The artists each consider an element of the museum’s print history, including the Roedde’s successful printing business and the decorative arts typical of the late 19th century. Inserting their artworks within the period rooms, the artists interrupt the museum’s dominant story of a middle-class European immigrant family and speak to Canada’s difficult colonial history, which continues to shape the nation’s present.

Memories of the Future III features an installation of prints and a collection of textiles by Achjadi and a new experimental dance film by Mochizuki that collapse fact and fiction and interweave official and counter histories. This exhibition is the third in a series of projects inviting contemporary artists to create artworks in response to the traditional stories told by historic house museums in Canada. Through a range of mediums and approaches these site-specific interventions explore the layered and hidden stories of our social and material histories. Using the visual language of the present and speculating on possibilities for the future, memories of the distant past are newly exposed, interpreted and remembered.
