A letter from the Roedde House Preservation Society:

Dear Friends of Roedde House Museum,

Today we are celebrating Giving Tuesday! This international event brings the global community together in the spirit of giving back to charitable organizations that are close to their hearts and that strive to make a positive impact in their community.

This year, we are asking for support in reaching our fundraising targets to complete annual maintenance projects centered around restoration, preservation and education in our historic 1893 house museum. In 2021 we will focus on both the Kitchen and the Boy's Room. All projects will be overseen by our dedicated team of staff and Board members and carried out by contractors with experience in handling heritage buildings.

RESTORATION: $2,500
  • Picture rail installation and window treatment (including replacement of deteriorated sash cords).
PRESERVATION: $3,000
  • Refinishing woodwork (door frames and windows), conservation-approved cleaning, purchase of carpets to protect floors, review and installation of conservation-approved lighting, and purchase of more acrylic drawer inserts for exhibit display.
EDUCATION: $1,800
  • Purchase of teaching collection (hands-on) items including a bedside table, icebox, small kitchen items and entrance hall light.
By supporting Roedde House Museum, you will participate in preserving a piece of Vancouver’s Victorian history for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.
DONATE NOW

Sincerely,
Billie-Ann Woo
President, Roedde House Preservation Society
Committee Spotlight: Anthony Norfolk

In 1988 Anthony joined the Board of the Community Arts Council of Vancouver, one of the supporters of Roedde House Museum, which was to open two years later. The late Janet Bingham, a former President of the Arts Council, was a founding force behind the establishment of the Museum. In 2007 Janet recruited Anthony to become President of the Museum Society, and he held that position until Billie-Ann Woo succeeded him in 2016. As Past President Anthony retains responsibility for liaison with the City of Vancouver. This includes renegotiating our operating agreement with the City.

Since the Roedde House Preservation Society is responsible for the interior of the building and all that goes on inside, we have continuously developed plans for the maintenance and improvement of the museum. We are now required to develop this more formally for approval by the City. Of course, we also have to raise the funds to pay for implementation of the Plan. Last year’s Plan was successfully implemented with significant support from generous donors. The Maintenance and Improvement Committee has has now developed the 2020/21 Plan, assisted by the Collections Committee and we hope you will help contribute to our goals for 2021.

Visit the Museum to see some of this past year's improvements, including:
  • New picture rails installed in the upstairs landing and stairwell
  • New tank in the Historic Bathroom
  • Wallpaper restoration in the Den and paint restoration in the upstairs landing and stairwell
  • Window sash restoration (phase 1)
  • New rugs to protect floors in the Collection's Room, Master Bedroom and Bathroom
Like most small museums across Canada, Roedde House depends largely on the financial support of the community to maintain its valuable events, programs and collections. We invite you to express your support for Vancouver’s only house-museum and become a donor.
