The number one thing seniors worry about is their health. But experts believe
that financial problems that potentially face seniors are just as worrisome as
health problems.

Images of retirement are usually pretty happy. A senior couple boating into the sunset. An aging woman chatting with friends over brunch. An older man playing golf with pals.

What you don’t typically see is an older couple carefully examining financial records. There’s a good reason for this: Finances make everyone a little uncomfortable. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t sit down with our aging loved ones for a frank conversation.

The number one thing seniors worry about is their health. But experts believe that financial problems that potentially face seniors are just as worrisome as health problems. To help seniors embrace the aging process and financial security, there are three essential steps all families have to take:

Have a Plan
This might seem obvious, but it’s important to know what your aging loved one envisions for their future. Take a moment to sit down and discuss their plans. Do they want to age in place? Would they prefer to go to a residential living facility? Do they want to redo their home and sell it?

Consult an Expert
Once you know their plans, it’s time to consult with a financial advisor or planner. Have the whole family sit together to go over the realistic costs of what your loved ones want. If the plan needs to be altered, work with the advisor to craft a plan that’s economically feasible and still within your loved one’s vision.

Know Your Finances
Are you prepared to help your loved ones out as they age? Can your finances handle caregiver costs, possible hospitalization, or home improvements that are necessary with aging? Bring your family together to discuss who can augment your loved one’s income.

At Capital City Nurses, we know that finances can be a hard subject to broach, but it’s an essential topic for any family. One difficult conversation can be the difference between successful aging and stressful senior years.

Capital City Nurses has long worked to provide the Washington Metropolitan Area with the absolute best in caregiving services. Our hand-picked staff of trained caregivers are committed to providing the best in at-home-healthcare to our clients.

It shows. We receive wonderful testimonials from clients every day. “I wanted my husband to have a nurse at his side who could assess his nursing care needs, provide expert assistance, answer his questions and evaluate his health status,” writes one client. “Our nurse did this and more! She was attentive, respectful and skilled in her care of my husband. When I called him in the hospital the morning following surgery he said to me “she was great! I gave her a workout. Whatever we are paying her it is not enough!””
