The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam on the tennis calendar and is regarded as one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. First held in 1905, every year the greatest players from across the globe assemble at Melbourne Park to battle through blistering temperatures in the hope of getting their hands on the coveted trophy.

In 2013, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic continued his imperious form on the Australian hard courts by collecting his record-breaking third consecutive Australian Open title. In the Final he gained some sweet revenge over Andy Murray following the Scots defeat of Djokovic in the Final of the 2012 US Open just a few months before. After winning a tie break each to share the first two sets, Djokovic found an extra gear and took the third and fourth sets 6-3, 6-2 respectively. Meanwhile, in the women’s singles it was Victoria Azarenka who successfully defended her title in Melbourne by coming back from a set down to claim a tough three set victory over China’s Li Na 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Searing hot matches during the day and late night matches under the floodlights, the Australian Open creates a unique challenge for the players and a fantastic spectacle for the fans. The tournament comes after the players’ short winter break and the season’s curtain raiser never fails to deliver a brilliant fortnight of world class tennis.
