Your Church Reaches Out to You

Rev. Kendrick writes:

In this confusing and complex time, when so many things are being canceled — how can your church be creative in reaching out to you? How can the ministry and mission of First Church  Boston be vibrant and constant, even when so many events are not happening?
Daniel Lawlor and I will be creating a more or less daily outreach to the members of FCB in the next several weeks Here's how it will work:
MONDAY CONNECT:  a short email message which will be a pastoral letter to all of you, starting off the week with a warm, gentle reminder we are all in this together, with a little humor and faith…
TUESDAY CATCH-UP:  happily, Buzz Bussewitz has been for the last three months transcribing my sermons, and we will be playing "catch-up" in emailing out to you an edited and up-dated sermon to read and to share.  We trust by the time we catch up sending these out, current travails will be in our rear view mirror...
WEDNESDAY MESSAGE:  yes, I am a low-tech kind of guy, but Daniel and I will be posting a video message every Weds. just to say hello, and offering a pastoral perspective on what's happening all around us--to be posted on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.
THURSDAY REFLECTION:  a brief poem or UU quote for your personal reflection, and this is open to your suggestions...
THE FRIDAY E-NEWS:  which you are reading now and which you have come to expect every Friday afternoon...

A Happy Announcement

We are happy to announce that we have, after a long and fruitful search, hired a new Administrator.  Her name is Julianna Dunn, and she comes to us with a 14-year history as Administrator of the "Old Ship Church" in Hingham--she could not come more highly recommended!  She has background in serving on UU boards and assisting in local UUA District programming.  Not only that, she previously served as President of her UU congregation in Scituate.
As if this was not enough, Julianna was dedicated and attended children's education here at First Church, and has a long association with us, and with the ministry of Rev. Rhys Williams.
Much thanks to the lay leaders, particularly Lew Gaffen, who formed the Search Team, and those members who interviewed our several candidates.  Julianna will start here on March 31st.

[IMPORTANT NOTE:
in this age of COVID-19, meetings of 25 people or more are dangerous and unlawful, and so in compliance with state and municipal regulations, only participants in the service will be admitted to the building; this really will be an all-virtual service! All are welcome to partake by listening to our broadcast on WERS radio, 88.9 FM, or by live-streaming video via the First Church Boston Facebook page. For more information on our COVID-19 policy follow this link; and for more on our virtual services, this one. ]

"When Fate Becomes Opportunity"

"There are a great deal of spiritual clichés out there, and most of them are extremely unhelpful.  But once in awhile, one strikes home with renewed vitality and usefulness.  In these stressful and worrisome times, there is a limited supply of good news, but one of them is the old idea that character is built in times of extremis.  I wouldn't carry this too far--I would rather all of you not have to be tested so--I like your current character just fine!  But life is simply too complex and complicated to not provide opportunities to grow and change--even when we don't want to, particularly.

  -- Stephen"
