Essential Reasons to See Your Doctor Preconception

In some cases, you should speak to a medical professional before trying to get pregnant. It can be worth a visit to your doctor if any of the following apply:

For women and the birthing parent:
  • You are due a cervical smear
  • You haven't had your rubella vaccination or you're not sure
  • You have any medical conditions that could impact your health during pregnancy (including high blood pressure)
  • You are taking medications and aren't sure whether they are safe during pregnancy
  • You think you might have an STI
For men and the second biological parent:
  • You have any long-term medical conditions that could impact your fertility
  • You have had any treatments that could impact your fertility, such as cancer treatment or a vasectomy
  • You’re taking medications regularly, including testosterone, and aren’t sure if they affect fertility
  • You can’t maintain an erection or ejaculate
  • You think you might have an STI
