President’s Note

August 2019

Hi Everyone.

Hope summer is treating you well.
This month a short note to focus on what’s new.
We are doing two new, cool things at A3L.

First, we now have a reading room.  It’s open to anyone to come study, have a small meeting, grab a cup of coffee, tea, or coffee, or read something from our art library.  We have WiFi for your convenience.  Also, A3L members can check out books or magazines from the library to read at home.  The Reading Room is located off the main Gallery floor, in what used to be Studio 1.

Second, in September we will be starting to have quarterly members/guest meetings.  Before you groan about “another meeting” let me say that these will be short - just to let you know what we’re doing.  Then comes the fun part.  Each meeting will be followed by a demonstration or program of interest to artists and those who love art.  The first meeting will be on September 22nd at 2 pm.   Lorelle Bacon will be doing a demonstration of her her jewelry making.  You know her work is amazing.  Now you’ll get to see how she does it.  These meetings and programs are open to members and their guests.  So plan to join us and bring a friend.  You can also suggest ideas for future programs.

That’s all until next month.

Lisa Steffens is a painter, printmaker and former art teacher/ graphic designer.  She received an MA in Communication Design from the University of the Arts, London, England and a formal art education from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in Greenwich Village. Lisa has had many lives, she grew up in the Hudson River Valley, emigrated to the UK, lived abroad for over two decades, and eventually moved back to the states. She is an old hand at reinventing herself, and a firm believer that art making can always travel as a constant companion no matter the journey. Now happily ensconced in the mountains of Western North Carolina, she intends to devote her time and energy to making art. Lisa’s work can be found in collections in the US, England, Spain and The Netherlands.

John Sharetts-Sullivan

Arrowhead Gallery’s August 2019 Featured Artist

I custom design cabinets, jewelry cabinets, and a wide range of wood products from hardwoods using standard woodworking floor machines (table saw, router, band saw, planer, etc.) and a variety of hand-held manual (chisel, hammer, hand plane, etc.) and power (orbital sander, drill, etc.) tools.

I design all of my wood projects and do not use commercial plans, diagrams or similar products.  I typically start a project using rough sawn lumber and plane it to final thickness.  I then cut each board to the necessary width for the project at hand.  After gluing the projects individual components, I assemble them with screws, nails, and glue. In addition to traditional woodworking, I turn custom pens, pencils, coffee and pepper grinder and also make scented wax candles.

Examples of my work are on display at the Arrowhead Gallery and Studios 78C Catawba Ave. Old Fort, NC

September Workshops

Pine Needle Baskets
Instructor: Kathleen Thacker

Sept 7th, 10 - 4

Cost $75 for members, $85 for nonmembers. $15 for supplies.

Class size limited to 5 (but see below).

Please bring a bag lunch; we’ll take a break mid-day.

Start with a bundle of pine needles and leave with a small coiled basket. You learn how to start with a base....a small piece of wood or a nut slice. You coil and “sew” together the coils to build up a basket. Lots of fun to watch it take shape. No prior skills needed. All materials and supplies are provided and included in the $15 supply fee.

The class will be limited to 5. However, we will take a waiting list. A fellow pine needle maker is trying to be available to help give individual help. If so, we will be able to increase class size.

Kathleen Thacker, our teacher, has been coiling for over five years. She has taken individual classes, week long workshops and attends a basket making group weekly when she is available, etc. She has gathered materials from all over the world and while she likes simplicity in her designs, each basket is distinctive. She displays at the gallery and enjoys selling her finished products.
