President’s Note

September 2018

Hello Everyone!
This month is a special one for A3L for a number of reasons.  First we are hosting our first competition for the high school aged students of McDowell County, in partnership with the Friends of the Mountain Gateway Museum and the Mountain Gateway Museum.  Every eligible student is invited to submit one piece of art or craft work. This competition is being held as part of the celebration of McDowell County’s 175 anniversary. The Friends group is offering cash prizes for the winning entries.  A3L is offering a gift certificate to the Arrowhead Gallery for the entry that best captures the theme of the show “Celebrating McDowell County – 175 years.” If you are a McDowell County high school aged student or know one please go to our website and review the prospectus for this competition.  You still have plenty of time to create the winning entry!

While this isn’t strictly an A3L subject, I want to help get the word out on a Call for Artists from the Mission Hospital for Advanced Medicine.  Their call is called “Celebrating North Carolina Art & Culture.”  The deadline is Friday, September 14, 2018, closes 12:00 AM (EST).  All entrants must be residents of Western North Carolina. They want 5-10 images from each entrant.  To get more information and to enter: Click Here

I’d also like to welcome new Arrowhead Gallery artist Kathleen Thacker.  She weaves pine needle baskets. Her work is amazing. We are privileged to be her first venue.  Please stop by the Gallery and check out her work. I’m “betting” that you’ll find that unique basket for yourself or to give as the perfect gift.

Blue Jean Ball
This month A3L is hosting its third annual Blue Jean Ball on September 29th.  Mill Creek Properties has provided us a much larger space so there will be more room for dancing and socializing with your friends.  Local celebrity chef Bruce Brown is the MC. The popular local band Rewind will return again this year to play all of your favorites.

There will be lots of party food as well as craft beer donated by Catawba Brewing.  We very much appreciate their donation.

Of course there will also be wine and plenty of non-adult beverages. We are again holding a silent auction as part of this event. Susie Painter and her team are working hard to make this the best Blue Jeans Ball ever.  You can buy tickets in advance for $25, or for $30 at the door. We will reserve a table for you if you have a party of 8 or more. Call the Gallery at 828-668-1100 for more information. This is A3L’s major annual fundraiser, so please come out to have fun and support the arts!

Don’t forget to check out the classes and workshops that education coordinator Lorelle Bacon has put together for September and October.
There are some great new offerings, as well as some of your favorites returning.

Thinking ahead, next month A3L holds its annual plein air painting competition,
the Battle of the Brushes, during peak leaf peeper season - the third week of
October. So tune up your plein skills and get ready. Then get out your plein air
gear and join the fun! There are cash prizes for the winners of this event as well.

Until next month, stay well and be safe.

Sept 8 1-4 PM.

$30 plus $30 for supplies

limited to 10 students, must be signed up by Sept. 1st.

Learn an interesting & fun technique for making monoprints using a gelatin plate. This is a fun way to make greeting cards, art and interesting backgrounds for painting images onto & making collages. Monoprinting is a form of printing that has images or lines that can only be made once,

Students will take home at least five greeting cards and two pieces suitable for framing or using in other art work, and a gelatin plate & brayer for making more.

Making monoprints is a recent “addiction” for me. I discovered it by accident viewing a journaling tutorial on a blog that I like. I have been having great fun making cards & other art piece with these prints.
