Presidents Note
June 2019

Hi Everyone.  Welcome to the beginning of summer and the”high” season for artists and crafters in our region.  During this time of year we can be outside doing work.  Lots of visitors also come to our area during this season to check out all that the WNC has to offer, including the great arts and crafts.

We had our annual meeting last month and elected three new Board members.  Before I introduce them let me first thank outgoing members Chuck Aldridge, Susie Painter, and Kelley Wheeler.  They each did amazing things for A3L and our local artists’ community.  If you see them, please give them your thanks as well.

Our new Board members are Cathy Bruggeman, Liz Meyer, and Stephanie Wilds.  Please join me in welcoming them.  Each has chosen her preferred focus area.  Cathy will be focusing on publicity and the website.  Liz will be our liaison to the schools and will organize our Gallery swaps.  Stephanie is already working with Lorelle Bacon on our classes and workshops education program.  She will eventually take over primary responsibility for it.  She is also taking on  researching and doing grants.  Wow.

Just as an aside, this will be my last year as president of A3L.  I am so looking forward to working with these great women and seeing what new directions they and the rest of our exceptional Board will take us in the future.

This month is our annual juried show in the Annex Gallery.  The theme is “Puppies and Kittens and More, Oh My”.  Fifteen percent of all proceeds from sales of works in this show will go to benefit Brother Wolf of McDowell County (or its successor organization).  Please come to the Gallery in Old Fort to see this great show. It’s our biggest of the year.   If you are an artist (2 or 3 D) it’s not too late to enter the competition.  Intake is this Thursday, June 6th.  Check out the prospectus on our website for details.

This month our featured artist is the amazing Marsha Woods.  More about her and her work below.  I love everything Marsha does.  John and I have several of her pieces in our personal collection at home.  We’d have more, but we’ve run out of walls.  You can see more of her work at the Arrowhead Gallery in Old Fort.

I mentioned last month that we would be doing something new in the Gallery this year.  The Board has voted and the members have agreed that we should open a coffee bar reading area in one of the studios.  This will be a place for folks to sit and work, hold a small meeting or read a good book.  All while surrounded by amazing art created by our many fine WNC artists.  There will be coffee, tea, and hot coco available for a small donation.  We aren’t selling anything in that room; just offering a restful gathering space.  Just FYI no food will be allowed because we are located in a factory that is open to the outside, with all of critters it holds.

I talked about new gallery artist, and now Board member, Cathy Bruggeman, last month but forgot to include a picture of her stained glass.  Here it is.  We’re also lucky to have burned wood cutting boards by her brother, new this month.  You should check them out.  I’ll try to post some pictures to our Facebook page when I’m in the gallery again.

Don’t forget to check out the great workshops and classes we’re offering.  Last month I made a spirit doll in Liz Meyer’s workshop.  Last week I finished making my first pottery glaze in Liz Turvaville’s pottery class.  And those are just a couple of the things you can do  in the classes and workshops we offer.  So much fun!

More next month.  Until then,

Helen Sullivan
President, Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League

The instructor will supply all wire. The process of winding, cutting and polishing rings will be demonstrated. The only tools needed are two pairs of jewelry pliers - flat nose or bent nose. Bring your own or you may borrow from the instructor. An Optivisor or similar magnifying device will be very helpful.

Bring a sack lunch and enjoy making two bracelets.

DISCOVERING YOUR HIDDEN ARTIST

Instructor Rachel Egosi

June 22nd from 10 to 4

$70 plus supply fee of $25

In this workshop students will learn to prepare different textures from familiar and unfamiliar materials on canvas before painting, and to create a special interest in the layers created by the use of different mediums, pasting of collages and finishing that comes from another dimension.

The workshops that I attend regularly have great success in inspiring and creating motivation for creative experimentation with practical art lovers, novice artists, veteran and experienced artists.

My method of teaching is spontaneous, which allows everyone to create without being a painter, and to be free and creative while work. The resulting work is surprising and exciting.

ARROWHEAD GALLERY’S JUNE FEATURED ARTIST

MARSHA WOODS

Marsha Woods has been a gallery artist for a number of years. The consitency with which she paints shows that she has mastered the oil painting medium well!

Many people through the years have taken home one of Marsha’s beautiful paintings to proudly hang in their homes.

Her works have won numerous awards and we just found out she will be entering two new pieces in the annual juried exhibit this month!

Marsha says that many times her paintings take on a life of their own while she is painting them. They turn out quite different than what she had in mind when she started! This technique makes her paintings look fresh and never overworked. Her brushstrokes or spontaneous and sure.

They capture light and mood which is quite difficult to maintain with someone less gifted.

Come by the gallery or the reception on Saturday June 8th from 2 to 4 and you can see her lovely paintings for yourself.
