President’s Note

September 2019

Hello everyone.
Lots of very exciting things are happening for A3L, the Gallery, and Old Fort.
First, we are moving the Annex Gallery and our classroom to a new, larger space in the Parker Hosiery building.   We’re very excited about this opportunity, but first we have some hard work to do and some adjustments to make to make it happen.  If you recall what the Gallery space looked like before we rehabbed it, you’ll know what I mean.  The new space is raw warehouse.  We’ll be scraping the floors to remove varnish, old paint and other things have accumulated over the years, then painting everything from the ceiling down.  We plan to do this this month.  Then we will move all of our classroom and Annex Gallery stuff into the new space.  All volunteer help is most, most welcomed for all of these efforts. Contact us at or call the Gallery at 8286681100 to volunteer.  We anticipate that the grand opening of the new space will be in October.  Photos to come, posted on our Facebook page.

Next, as many of you may know Hillman Beer, in Asheville, and Kitsbow, a California corporation, are moving into space in the Parker Hosiery Building, bringing new jobs and a welcome revitalization to Old Fort.  The really big building we will all share is starting to fill up.  We expect to see the synergy that these new businesses will bring to our area and to our Gallery happening within the next year.  To start, at least one piece of art from our Gallery was gifted to Kitsbow as part of its welcome to Old Fort.  We hope to see it hanging in their new space.
Because of these changes we are adjusting our monthly show schedule.  Focus on Photography, which was to be our September show, will move to October. We’re hoping to make the opening of this show coincide with the grand opening of the new Annex Gallery.   Battle of the Brushes has been cancelled, but our November/December show, Instructor and Student, will go on as scheduled.

Last, but definitely not least, we have new artists in the Gallery and some great new workshops coming up in the next couple of months.  There are two photographers and a new potter in the Gallery.  To learn more, stop by and see their work.  Kathleen Thacker will be teaching us how to weave pine needle baskets in a workshop this month.  I am personally looking forward to this one.  Raquel Egosi will also be teaching a workshop this month.  Hers will focus on showing us how she creates the most amazing effects with collages.  I believe egg shells may be involved.  Wow. Also Catherine Bruggeman, our September Artist of the Month, will be doing another stained glass workshop.  She is back by popular demand.  Lorelle Bacon will be teaching a precious metal clay workshop at the end of the month.  If you’ve stopped by the Gallery you already know her amazing work.  Check out the workshop information below for more details.

Until October.

Among other things… I have been involved with Stained Glass for 31 years!

I opened my business designing custom windows and moved quickly into the teaching. My passion for the beauty of glass is one I would love to instill in all my students. Although not for the faint of heart (cuts, burns and practice!) it is always rewarding, and the possibilities are endless, only limited by your imagination!

2018 has brought another aspect to my creations, adding semi-precious stones, crystals and geodes to designs, passion reignited!

The supplies you will need to bring with you to complete this are:

Pine Needle Baskets
Instructor: Kathleen Thacker

Sept 7th, 10 - 4

Cost $75 for members, $85 for nonmembers. $15 for supplies.

Class size limited to 5 (but see below).

Please bring a bag lunch; we’ll take a break mid-day.

Start with a bundle of pine needles and leave with a small coiled basket. You learn how to start with a base....a small piece of wood or a nut slice. You coil and “sew” together the coils to build up a basket. Lots of fun to watch it take shape. No prior skills needed. All materials and supplies are provided and included in the $15 supply fee.

The class will be limited to 5. However, we will take a waiting list. A fellow pine needle maker is trying to be available to help give individual help. If so, we will be able to increase class size.

Kathleen Thacker, our teacher, has been coiling for over five years. She has taken individual classes, week long workshops and attends a basket making group weekly when she is available, etc. She has gathered materials from all over the world and while she likes simplicity in her designs, each basket is distinctive. She displays at the gallery and enjoys selling her finished products.
