President’s Note

July 2019
Hi Everyone and Happy Birthday America!
I hope this USA Birthday month finds you and your loved ones well and safe.

This month I’ve been asked to explain how you can support A3L without spending a dime out of pocket that you wouldn’t already be spending if you shop on Amazon.com.  Have you ever heard of smile.amazon.com? This is Amazon’s charity arm. If you shop online at Amazon, all you have to do is go to smile.amazon.com to register. Once you do, you pick your favorite charity.  Of course we hope that it’s the Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League, or A3L, for short. Amazon has a very long list of charities that qualify. Just search for us by name. Once you select us, .5% of everything you buy will go to A3L automatically.  It only takes a few minutes to sign up. It doesn’t cost you a penny more to shop. Just be sure that you are on smile.amazon.com when you do your shopping. Same stuff, same prices, same everything else. To you its invisible but to us it can make a world of difference.  Thanks so much!

This month at the Arrowhead Gallery we are celebrating America with our July show, “Celebrating Our Differences.”  With this show we are asking All Artists and Artisans to demonstrate their feelings and visual expressions of the idea of how all we Americans are the all the same, no matter what background someone has or what path people are on.   We want everyone to take a look at our culture from a different perspective, and for artists to use their mediums in a new way. For more information and a copy of the prospectus, visit our website at www.arrowheadart.org.  Intake for this show is July 5th.  It will hang throughout the month.  Even if you don’t plan to enter this event, please stop by and check out the work.  Then vote for your favorite. The piece with the most votes gets the People’s Choice Award for the month.

Next month’s show is one of our judged shows.  We are doing this one in coordination with the Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort.  It comes with a beach reception on August 3rd at the Museum and the Gallery, in addition to prize ribbons for the first, second and third place winners.  So if you can’t get to the beach, we are bringing the beach to you. The judge for this show is Lisa Steffens.  The theme is “From the Beach to the Mountains.”

Last month our show was a fund raiser for Brother Wolf of McDowell County.  If you came to the show, especially on the day when Brother Wolf had a few of its adorable kitties and puppies available for you to pet and cuddle and adopt, you know how special this show was and how near to all of our hearts.   (I happen to be sitting at my desk with one of our amazing rescue kitties now. Of course, she will say she rescued us, not the other way around. I thank Brother Wolf and Mercy and the other dedicated rescuers in Mc Dowell County for saving so many animals and bringing them together with their forever homes.)  Just glad we could help in a very small way. BW, its not too late to donate to Brother Wolf. If you can’t get to Marion, we will take your donations at the Gallery and pass them along. Just make sure you identify the donation as being for Brother Wolf.

Also this month, we are offering some very interesting and different classes and workshops.  For Sunday Painters, Ellen Preckel will be teaching us how to make a charm bracelet. As always, these sessions are free and open to the public, but space is limited so sign up early.  Call the Gallery at 828-668-1100. Also this month, Mixed Media Small Art by Dawn Dreibus. Next month Lorelle Bacon is offering a Watercolor 101 and Dona Barnett is offering an Etching workshop.

Weekly classes new this month, Terri Davey is offering a beginning sewing class.  Lots of you have asked for this in the past, so Terri has stepped up to make it happen.  She’s only taking two students, so you’ll have lots of individual attention. You can bring your own machine or rent one of ours.  See our website at www.arrowheadart.org for more info or to sign up.  Check under Classes and Workshops.  Also this month Dona Barnett is starting a regular Colored Pencil Drawing class.  It begins On July 11st from 1-3 PM. See our website for more information or to sign up.

Lastly, we need volunteers.  We need help keeping the Gallery open and in welcoming visitors to the Gallery.  We also need folks interested in helping with our monthly shows or organizing and setting up our annual Blue Jeans Ball.  We would also welcome new instructors, who have expertise in various arts and craft media. One key need we have is one or more folks willing to serve on our Board of Directors, perhaps stepping up to a leadership position over the next couple of years.  This is my last year as A3L’s president. I am really looking forward to what the next generation of leaders will bring to our organization. We are already seeing this in the new view points and experiences being brought to A3L by new Board members Catherine Bruggeman, Liz Meyer, and Stephanie Wilds.  Please call the Gallery and leave your name and phone number, or email us at a3l@arrowheadart.org if you would like to volunteer or have questions about volunteering.
We especially need volunteers who are willing to be trained as Gallery sitters.

That’s all for this month.  More to come in August.
