Rachel's summer

I have had a busy few months with student daughters home for the summer and my two grandchildren to stay. But I have also managed to visit a huge number of historic properties including Saltram House, Cotehele, Mount Edgcumbe, Osterley Park and Strawberry Hill and have attended a special preview of the current exhibition at Buckingham Palace: Royal Childhood. Now I am focused on getting my Regency costume finished ready for the Jane Austen Festival in Bath in just over a week’s time. If you are taking part in or watching the parade, do stop me and say hello.

Regency dress making

My Regency outfit progresses

by Rachel Knowles

If you have read my blog, My Regency dress – made to measure, you will know that I am having a Regency costume made and that I will be wearing it in public for the first time at the Jane Austen Festival Grand Regency Costumed Promenade in Bath on 13 September.

This week, I had the fitting for my Spencer jacket. Originally, I had wanted the Spencer in cotton because, being an eminently practical person, I thought it would be a good idea if it was washable. However, when Natalie showed me the range of colours I could choose from, I had a change of heart. The cotton colours available that were most accurate for the period were rather pale and muted. Having gone for a cream dress, I fancied a brightly coloured jacket, and so I was persuaded to go for silk after all. I chose a lovely red – a colour that was popular throughout the Regency. I hope you agree that it was a good choice.
