Childhood Metabolic Obesity Clinic at Royal London Hospital

Since Monday, 8 August 2022, direct referrals into the Tier 3 paediatric obesity clinic at RLH (Paediatric Metabolic Obesity Clinic - Paediatrics (RLH) - Barts Health NHS Trust - R1H) have closed. This is in line with other Trusts.

Patients who require an obesity workup should be referred to their local general paediatric service (or other appropriate speciality based on complication – e.g. diabetes/endocrine for raised HbA1c or type 2 diabetes, etc). All referrals into Barts Health general paediatrics should be made through advice and guidance and will be triaged.
A Complications of Excess Weight (CEW) Clinic for extreme cases of childhood obesity, with established significant complications, is being piloted at Barts Health with consultants considering all appropriate cases.

Webinar: Better Clinical Care & Sustainability in Airways Disease

Did you know? Inhalers account for 3-4% of the NHS' carbon footprint.  A shocking statistic is that a ventolin MDI inhaler has the same carbon footprint as driving from London to Sheffield due to the propellant gas it contains.  The Investment and Impact Fund incentivises greener prescribing in this area.

NHS London Respiratory Clinical Network and Greener NHS London will host a webinar on Thursday, 22 September 2022, to provide knowledge and understanding of the need to change to low carbon inhalers. Entitled "The Symbiosis of Better Clinical Care and Sustainability in Airways Disease," the event will take place from 1.30-4.30pm.

All Primary Care clinicians involved in the care of patients with respiratory disease are encouraged to attend.

Feedback on Urgent Care Plan

It has been nearly two weeks since the Urgent Care Plan (UCP) has been live.  Deploying a pan-London care planning application that integrates with multiple Electronic Patient Records has been a herculean task. It has taken thousands of people to make this happen.

There have been challenges for EMIS users to configure the Valida client and register their smartcards. The team continue to provide daily Valida Configuration support sessions, which are linked on our website homepage:

Please feel free to give your feedback on this process to help the team continually improve the UCP.  In addition, see more information about helpful links to help navigate the application.

East London has the highest birth rate in the UK. Our health and care services must fully support this growth and continue to ensure the best possible outcomes for mothers and babies. In particular, Healtwatch is looking to understand the experiences of patients people from minority or marginalised groups when accessing and experiencing maternity services.

Talk changes (City & Hackney IAPT) is offering a new online treatment programme (Compass) for people with long-term physical health conditions who:
  • experience low mood or anxiety
  • find it difficult to manage their condition
The programme is tailored to the individual and uses a cognitive behavioural approach to help get an understanding of the difficulties they may be facing and how to manage them.
Compass is available to patients who are accessing support at Talk Changes (City & Hackney IAPT) either through self-referral, or referrals can be made by a healthcare professional.

Community Diagnostics Centres - Feedback needed

The North East London NHS is asking for feedback from local people and stakeholders on the plans for Community Diagnostic Centres.

Health and care partners have been working together to develop the proposals that would see freestanding, digitally connected, multi-diagnostic centres in north east London. The aim is to increase capacity where it is most needed, for a range of key tests; to improve patient access, experience and health outcomes; whilst reducing health inequalities and increasing efficiency – for example reducing pressure on hospitals.

There will be various online events to find out more and ask questions with the next one taking place on Saturday, 13 August 2022, 10-11.30am.
