Anne Woods starts as our new Participation Worker

Anne (top right) works three days a week based in our Ddole Road offices in Llandrindod Wells. For the next few weeks she will be finding out more about the project, which involves developing the mental health networks in Powys, and getting to know her PAVO colleagues. Dementia Awareness Day

Just to be different, our team decided to hold a Dementia Awareness Day in mid May the week before Dementia Awareness Week! It was specifically aimed at the Wellness & Recovery Learning Centres (Ponthafren Association and the Mind centres in Powys) to share information about dementia services and activities in the county. The Alzheimer's Society, Brecon Dementia Friendly Community, Powys teaching Health Board and Powys Befrienders also participated. Harold Proctor (PtHB) chats to Jane Cooke from our team in the photo. Participation Officer vacancy
 
As Freda Lacey moves on to her new role in Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) as Senior Officer Health & Social Care, we will shortly be seeking a new Participation Officer in the mental health team. This job will be 4 days a week, focusing on supporting and developing mental health participation in Powys. More information coming soon on the PAVO job pages.

All Wales Participation Network - Power to Local People in practice

Wednesday 17 June, Llandrindod Wells. Free entry.
In January 2015 the Minister for Local Government published a consultation on a White Paper: Reforming Local Government - Power to Local People. The paper highlights the need for greater collaboration between public service providers, individuals and communities with more power to local people. This chimes with the forward movement in Wales around co-production and alternative forms of service delivery. This network event aims to look at the practical implications of this from the perspective of those with a responsibility for service delivery. More here.

Citizen Directed Co-operatives Cymru Roadshow 2015
10 June - Llanelli, 16 June - Cardiff, 23 June - Carmarthen

CDCC is an innovative project delivered in partnership between Disability Wales and Wales Co-operative Centre and is funded by Big Lottery’s BIG Innovation fund until March 2018. The project will support greater voice, choice and control for disabled people through the development of citizen led Direct Payment co-operatives. More here.

Hate Crime Project—Have you suffered abuse because of mental distress? 
Alex Grove and Race Equality First are recording the experiences of those subjected to hate crime, particularly on the grounds of mental distress. The aim is to provide an insight into the potential barriers of reporting incidents of hate crime, and to make recommendations to improve services offered by charities. NEWS, EVENTS & TRAINING
 

£3 million for mental health projects across Wales. Third sector and voluntary organisations will receive funding from the Welsh Government to run mental health projects across Wales, Health and Social Services Minister Mark Drakeford announced in May. More here.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has produced new best practice guidelines for patients brought to hospital by the police. You can find out more and download a full copy of the guidance here.

A new website for a new network for anyone interested in health in Wales. Register your organisation on the mental health section.

On the 14 May 2015 Hafal launched the ‘All together Now! – a new campaign which aims to address issues such as feeling lonely and isolated through music. 

Run by service users and carers and supported by Hafal, Bipolar UK, the Mental Health Foundation and Diverse Cymru, the All Together Now! Roadshow will travel across Wales with music festivals and events taking place in each of the 22 counties (Powys - 22 July at the Royal Welsh Show). For more information visit the Hafal website.

Mind has produced a new Food and Mood booklet with ideas about how to make positive changes to the way you eat and help improve your mental wellbeing. More here.

Getting in on the Act:  The Care Council for Wales is developing a national learning and development plan to support the implementation of the Social Services & Well-being (Wales) Act. Find out more at one central online hub here.

Dementia Friendly Awards 2015 - your chance to vote!
For the past 3 years individuals, groups and organisations across the UK have been actively working to create dementia-friendly communities which provide an inclusive and supportive environment for people living with dementia, their families and carers. To celebrate the incredible achievements communities across the UK have made in becoming dementia-friendly, Alzheimer's Society are holding the second Dementia Friendly Awards. Waterfall crowdfunding opportunity
Waterfall is a film project about coping with suicide
and living with depression produced by sound designer Tom Lock Griffiths, who is coming to terms with his mother's suicide 12 years ago. Filming has started, but the film makers are seeking extra funds. More here.
