Handmade Music School: Upcoming Workshops

Upcoming Events at the Floyd Country Store

Wednesday, May 15 @ 7:30pm

Tim Eriksen is acclaimed for transforming American tradition with his startling interpretations of old ballads, love songs, shape-note gospel and dance tunes from New England and Southern Appalachia. He combines hair-raising vocals with inventive accompaniment on banjo, fiddle, guitar and bajo sexto – a twelve string Mexican acoustic bass – creating a distinctive hardcore Americana sound. Eriksen’s own compositions, which NetRhythms UK described as “strange and original works,” have been featured in films like the Billy Bob Thornton vehicle Chrystal and the documentary Behold the Earth. Eriksen’s other notable work has included extensive contributions to Anthony Minghella’s 2004 Oscar-winning film Cold Mountain, as well as collaborations ranging from hardcore punk and Bosnian pop to symphony orchestra and the 2010 Grammy-nominated album Across the Divide with Afro-Cuban world-jazz pianist Omar Sosa.
Presented in part by Springhouse Community School.

Tim Eriksen performs "Every Sound Below"
Thursday, May 16 @ 7:30pm

High Fidelity is a classic bluegrass band of stellar musicians and singers who are steeped in the sounds of tradition and outstanding in their field. They draw much of their inspiration from bands like Don Reno & Red Smiley, The Stanley Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, Jim & Jesse, and a host of lesser known regional artists from the same era. Many have described them as the new Johnson Mountain Boys, interpreting classic era bluegrass through the fresh, young perspective of today’s generation. Maybe it is this quality that makes High Fidelity so warmly received and widely loved by every audience they perform for – both by the grandparents and the grandchildren.

High Fidelity play their #1 Bluegrass Unlimited Chart topper: "Hills and Home"
Saturday, May 18 @ 7:30pm

Kevin began his musical voyage at the age of four. Encouraged and mentored by his Uncle and biggest fan, Boone Estep. At age 10, he formed his first band “Elkhorn Grass.” Elkhorn Grass enjoyed 11 years of touring together. Now, over thirty years later, Kevin has played in 49 States and 23 countries—moving from being one of the best sidemen in bluegrass to leading his own talented and unique band. From the hills of Appalachia, Kevin Prater and his band capture that 'Pure Kentucky' sound.

The Price Sisters, feature Lauren Price, mandolin, harmony/lead vocals, and Leanna Price, fiddle, lead/harmony vocals. Lauren and Leanna are twenty-two year old twin sisters from Sardis, Ohio, who love and perform the traditional style of bluegrass music. They have been greatly influenced and inspired by the sounds of Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys, Hazel and Alice, and the Carter Family, and strive to carry forth those traditional sounds established so long ago. Accompanied by a full band, The Price Sisters’ sound is original and fresh, while also capturing the essence of the traditional style of bluegrass music laid down by Bill Monroe and his disciples.

The Price Sisters play "Bluegrass Breakdown"
Saturday, June 1 @ 7:30pm

It’s rare to find such mature and confident voices in such young artists—whose music springs so organically from a grassroots connection to the traditional music community in which they were raised. Since the release of 'Time is Everything' Leva and Calcagno have toured as a duo across Canada, the US, and the UK, and received wide critical praise. Rolling Stone Country wrote that the album “shines a light on the past without giving up its place in the present” and Wide Open Country called the record “a triumph of lyricism and musicianship.” As individuals, they have performed with Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Donna the Buffalo, and Bruce Molsky to name just a few. To this collaboration they bring both the steady hands of experience and a refined taste for American music, yet still a youthful abandon that can’t be forced.

Kenny and Amanda Smith
Saturday, June 15 @ 7:30pm

The Kenny and Amanda Smith Band combines gutsy, heartfelt vocals, brilliant instrumental talents and a powerful, contemporary sense of song choice and arrangement into one of the most compelling new sounds in bluegrass today.

A creation of the intensely personal musical and romantic connection between Kenny and Amanda, the band shares an all-too-rare sense of intimacy and cohesion where each musician feels an almost telepathic connection. Musicians call it being in the groove, where the group collectively accents each beat in precisely the same way. With Kenny leading the way on guitar, this band never has trouble finding the groove.
