Happy New Year from The Floyd Country Store! We hope that you had a warm and festive holiday season and a grand start to 2019. Here at the Store, we kicked off the New Year with a delicious dinner and energetic dance played by one of our favorite string bands, Five Mile Mountain Road.

Looking at our calendar for the next few months, we have got so much to look forward to. The Floyd Radio Show starts us off tomorrow, January 5th, with young powerhouse band ShadowGrass (including flat picking champion Presley Barker), old time band The Thundering Tardigrades (MJ Epps, Joseph Dejarnette and David and Mary Winston), and Gina & Jason Dilg. And even if you can't make it to the show in person, we have partnered with MixLR to bring a seamless radio experience right to your home. Follow us and tune in at 7:30pm ET on Saturday, January 5th HERE. Other great acts are coming to the Store this spring, including Jeff Little Trio, Kaia Kater, Jacob Jolliff Band, Larry Sparks and The Lonesome Ramblers, High Fidelity and more! See below for details on our upcoming Spring 2019 schedule.
Congratulations to Alison and Zaila Prudner, winners of this year's Gingerbread House Contest! The duo was dubbed this year's Gingerbread Architects of the Year. Their gingerbread church was a beautiful creation, and even had stained-glass windows made from melted Jolly Rancher candies! We hope to see many more gingerbread houses at next year's competition.
The Floyd Country Store will be closed from Monday, January 7 through Wednesday, January 9 for routine maintenance and inventory. We will open with regular hours on Thursday, January 10.

Ben Hunter & Joe Seamons are songster revivalists who perform acoustic blues, field hollers, fiddle & banjo breakdowns and early jazz that delights audiences in concerts and workshops nationwide. They found an affinity in the many branches that tied into the blues and created this duo as a way to explore these branches. Their musical kinship and sense of joy in interpreting this music is evident. Rather than thinking of their music as blues, it’s best to situate Ben and Joe as American songsters. A songster traditionally refers to an artist whose repertoire is much broader than the old blues, and spans many of the genres that Ben and Joe inhabit. Uncle Dave Macon, Robert Johnson, and Charlie Patton are classic examples of songsters. Their music hews to the rough-and-tumble collisions of musical inspirations from the early 20th century; music that paved the way for everything we enjoy today.

Allison DeGroot & Tatiana Hargreaves
Saturday, January 26 @ 7:30pm

Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves, two women on the forefront of American traditional music, join forces in this powerful new duo. Their reverence for the people and music that has come before them provides a platform on which they build their own musical vocabulary. With banjo, fiddle, and voice, Allison (Molsky’s Mountain Drifters) and Tatiana (Laurie Lewis) seek out unusual repertoire that catches their ear and inspires them to explore the boundaries of the tune. Their debut album showcases a strong new voice that is both reflective and dynamic. Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves will be releasing a full length album in 2019, and will be bringing much of their new repertoire to the Floyd Country Store!

Jeff Little continues an often hidden, yet fascinating tradition of piano playing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. With few exceptions, the piano does not play a prominent part in Appalachian music, and is rarely the lead instrument. But Jeff Little is an exception—and a remarkable one. His distinctive two-handed style, much influenced by mountain flatpicked-guitar tradition, is breathtaking in its speed, precision, and clarity. Appearing with Jeff Little is the father-son team of Steve Lewis and Josh Scott. Steve is one of the most respected banjo and guitar players in the Blue Ridge, and has taken top picking honors in a host of contests, including the Walnut Valley Nationals, Merlefest, Galax’s Old Fiddlers’ Convention, and the Wayne C. Henderson Guitar Competition. Josh Scott is an accomplished bass player with over a decade of professional experience.

A Montreal-born Grenadian-Canadian, Kaia Kater grew up between two worlds: her family’s deep ties to folk music and the years she spent soaking up Appalachian music in West Virginia. Her old-time banjo-picking skills, deft arrangements, and songwriting abilities have landed her in the spotlight in North America and the UK, garnering critical acclaim from outlets such as NPR, CBC Radio, Rolling Stone, BBC Music, and No Depression. This show is presented by Floyd Creative Studios and supported in part by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Before joining Yonder Mountain String Band, Jacob Jolliff founded beloved New England roots band Joy Kills Sorrow, while attending Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. The band logged three records, hundreds of shows, and thousands of miles of worldwide touring. In 2012, Jolliff had the distinctive honor of being named the National Mandolin Championship winner. A fixture of the national bluegrass community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, and David Grisman to name a few.
The Jacob Jolliff Band features some of the most virtuosic and innovative young pickers in the country, including Jolliff’s long-time partner-in-crime, Alex Hargreaves, on fiddle. Considered one of best improvising violinists in the world, Hargreaves is the winner of The Grand Masters Fiddle Championship and The National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest. He is also a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet. On guitar is bluegrass upstart Stash Wyslouch, founder of The Deadly Gentleman and current member of The Stash! Band and the Bruce Molsky led Molsky’s Mountain Drifters. Bassist Jeff Picker was a staple of the Portland jazz scene before relocating to NYC. He now currently performs with bluegrass phenom Sarah Jarosz and Ricky Skaggs.

Larry Sparks is a dedicated leader for bluegrass music. Larry is among the most widely known and respected touring musicians in bluegrass and gospel music today. Larry began his career in the mid-1960s as a guitarist with the Stanley Brothers and later became lead vocalist for Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. Larry went on to form his own band in 1969. (The Lonesome Ramblers) He has recorded and toured with his band for nearly 50 years, releasing over 60 albums and delighting countless fans with his soulful vocals and unparalleled musicianship. He was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

While Sparks is most definitely a stylist, his approach to the music is real, with no gimmicks. After fifty years in the spotlight, Larry is still on a roll and creating some of his best music.
