Handmade Music School: Upcoming Workshops
Upcoming Concerts at The Floyd Country Store
Saturday, July 6 @ 7:30pm

It was in the spirit of family music that pencil artist and songwriter Willard Gayheart came together with grand-daughter Dori Freeman and son-in-law Scott Freeman in the frame shop that Willard owns near Galax, Virginia. Along with Dori’s husband Nick Falk, the family recorded an album of Willard’s originals and favorite songs. The resulting album, At Home in the Blue Ridge, released in May 2019 on Blue Hens Music, is Willard Gayheart’s first solo album in his 87 years. Over two days, the family gathered to play Willard’s songs, crowding around mics and recording everything live. The family comes together again on July 6th at The Floyd Country Store to celebrate the release of this long-anticipated project.

After 20 years of songwriting and recording on Music Row in Nashville, Irene returns to her bluegrass roots for her second album with Mountain Fever Records, "Benny's TV Repair." Music historian Robert K. Oermann sums up her great gifts this way: “As a vocalist, Irene Kelley glows with beauty and expressiveness. As a songwriter, she shines with a luster that few of her peers can match. This is music to cleanse the soul. This is music to raise you up. This is music to touch your heart.”

Special Consensus
Saturday, October 27 @ 7:30pm

The Special Consensus is a bluegrass band that has achieved a contemporary sound in their four decades of performing, making their music a modern classic. Band leader and founder Greg Cahill is a recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and Special Consensus has received five awards from the IBMA and two Grammy nominations.
Special Consensus’ sound is grounded in a deep appreciation and understanding of bluegrass music; the infectious band sound reminds people of the past while utilizing the innovations of today.  With the foundation of Greg’s unique banjo playing style, Rick Faris (guitar), Nick Dumas (mandolin), and Dan Eubanks (bass) effortlessly support each other and consistently maintain their bluegrass center whether they’re playing a jazz-tinged instrumental or a song from their award-winning John Denver tribute album. These four talented vocalists and instrumentalists follow their creative desires without straying too far from their roots.
