Handmade Music School: Upcoming Workshops

Upcoming Events at the Floyd Country Store

Saturday, February 9 @ 7:30pm

Jeff Little continues an often hidden, yet fascinating tradition of piano playing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. With few exceptions, the piano does not play a prominent part in Appalachian music and is rarely the lead instrument. But Jeff Little is an exception—and a remarkable one. His distinctive two-handed style, much influenced by mountain flatpicked-guitar tradition, is breathtaking in its speed, precision, and clarity. Appearing with Jeff Little is his son Luke Little, and celebrated instrumentalist Steve Lewis. Steve is one of the most respected banjo and guitar players in the Blue Ridge and has taken top picking honors in a host of contests, including the Walnut Valley Nationals, Merlefest, Galax’s Old Fiddlers’ Convention, and the Wayne C. Henderson Guitar Competition. Josh Scott is an accomplished bass player with over a decade of professional experience.

Admission: $12 in advance / $15 day of show

Join us the first Saturday in March for the celebrated Floyd Radio Show. With three musical acts, comedy skits, jokes, stories and more, this is an evening that you won't want to miss! This month's guests include Tricia Spencer and Howard Rains, fiddlers and singers who preserve and build upon the traditions of their home states of Texas and Kansas. The husband and wife duo are known for their distinct twin fiddling and close-knit vocal harmony. The Sunny Mountain Serenaders will also be joining us, an old time trio of our own Mac Traynham, Richmond-based fiddler Mark Campbell and John Schwab on guitar.
Our third guest is talented singer-songwriter and banjoist Gina Furtado. Although based in traditional music, Gina's innovative and unique musicianship and songwriting makes a new musical statement that's influenced by emotion, is played with the highest skill, and expresses an enormous verve and vitality.

A Montreal-born Grenadian-Canadian, Kaia Kater grew up between two worlds: her family’s deep ties to folk music and the years she spent soaking up Appalachian music in West Virginia. Her old-time banjo-picking skills, deft arrangements, and songwriting abilities have landed her in the spotlight in North America and the UK, garnering critical acclaim from outlets such as NPR, CBC Radio, Rolling Stone, BBC Music, and No Depression. This show is presented by Floyd Creative Studios and supported in part by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Before joining Yonder Mountain String Band, Jacob Jolliff founded beloved New England roots band Joy Kills Sorrow, while attending Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. A fixture of the national bluegrass community and 2012 National Mandolin Champion, Jacob has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, and David Grisman to name a few.
The Jacob Jolliff Band features some of the most virtuosic and innovative young pickers in the country, including Jolliff’s long-time partner-in-crime, Alex Hargreaves, on fiddle. Considered one of best improvising violinists in the world, Hargreaves is the winner of The Grand Masters Fiddle Championship and The National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest. He is also a member of the Turtle Island String Quartet. On guitar is bluegrass upstart Stash Wyslouch, founder of The Deadly Gentleman and current member of The Stash! Band and the Bruce Molsky led Molsky’s Mountain Drifters. Bassist Jeff Picker was a staple of the Portland jazz scene before relocating to NYC. He now currently performs with bluegrass phenom Sarah Jarosz and Ricky Skaggs.
