September 2015

I've had a productive month. It started with being a groomsman at a wedding in Joshua Tree National Park and then segued to a series of speaking gigs in the Bozeman, Montana area. The first presentation (which I gave two consecutive nights to a total of nearly eight-hundred people) was with an organization called Pecha Kucha. The format of such a speech is that you get twenty slides and twenty seconds per slide, limiting your talk to six minutes and forty seconds. My piece was entitled "A Field Guide to Losing Your Friends," and can be viewed below:

Two days later I had a Grim Love book reading at The Country Bookshelf. This was fun as I got to shift from the heavy material at Pecha Kucha to something far more playful (but just as dark). The bookstore even gave me an amazing window display to promote the event:

Then I went on to participate in my first podcast interview (something established at the wedding earlier in the month). Though I wasn't as eloquent as I'd hoped, the podcast was quite enjoyable and an unexpected learning experience:

Lastly, as of a few months ago, I decided to undertake a five-part environmental series of which I would be the series editor. This project has been fulfilling in that I get to champion the voices of other creative individuals with ecological advocacy on their hearts. The first release, WATER, is now available online for free (which will be followed each subsequent month by episodes regarding fauna, air, flora, and earth).

This episode tells the story of Taylor Adam Swift's month-long voyage at sea to collect and analyze trash from the world's largest plastic accumulation zone (the Great Pacific Garbage Patch). If you're unaware of this situation I'd suggest reading the issue:
