Dear Friend,

I truly hope that you and your loved ones are well and safe.

As the majority of New York City’s schools have shut down to prevent the spread of coronavirus, providing support to the children and their families of KAFSC’s Hodori After-school program cannot be put on hold.

As an after-school program that serves 100% immigrant children and their parents/caretakers who live under the poverty line, the support being provided during this school closing is crucial to these families. Many parents are challenged by this new reality of online learning because of language barriers and digital illiteracy. Many of our families don’t have proper access to devices and/or internet access and have had difficulty accessing resources that are available to them. These challenges are multiplied when there is more than one child in the family, and especially in the presence of family violence. Not only do our Hodori After-school program staff and teachers provide support for our parents to navigate online learning in a culturally sensitive and linguistically competent way, KAFSC has shifted the program to be conducted remotely while continuing to provide the same curriculum to our Hodori students!

We all know the joy and innocence of children is amazing, and it is heartwarming to observe the  interactions of our Hodori students, even through virtual meetings: children eager to say hello to their Hodori friends, a hand raised to ask permission to go to the bathroom, and the simple excitement and happiness to be in “virtual” community.

Even in times like these our children and youth are resilient — we are amazed at the adaptability of our children and youth who have had to adjust to a new normal overnight. We are reminded through them to pause and acknowledge the simple blessings — family, friends, and community.

Please Give Help for Hope to support these resilient children today! The Hodori After-school Program is just one of many essential programs and services provided by KAFSC during these challenging times. You can make a difference in the lives of these survivors and their children by making a donation here:

Thank you for your continued generosity.  Stay safe and healthy.
