Members Regular Update

Dear Members,

I am very excited to report that preparations for the Launch of Parliamentary Friends of Australian Spirits are progressing at a rapid pace. The event will be held

Wednesday 3 February 2021 Queen’s Terrace Parliament House, Canberra 6:00 – 8:00 pm

The theme of the launch is
"Supporting jobs from Farm to Glass”

We have been getting a good response from Members of Parliament and Senators from the full spectrum of Australian Politics. The purpose of the event is to generate support for our industry and to showcase the innovation and uniqueness  of the Australian Distilled Spirits Industry.

I have attached the invitation below for any member who is able to attend. If you are able to attend, please contact me directly as well as RSVP to the details on the invitation.

We have several members who have already committed to providing samples of their products.

What I need now is a few things from you.

  • If you are not able to attend, I would really appreciate if you could send a bottle of your product, or some merchandise from your distillery that we can get a photo and video of your local MP at the Launch of PFAS saying they are supporting the local product from their Electorate in Canberra. If you are able to do this, I need you to provide a brief outline of your product and a couple of lines about your business. I also need a short declaration of the approximate retail value.

  • Whilst we have some stands to be set up with cocktails from some Members, I would also like to have a wide selection of innovative and creative Australian Spirits for Members of Parliament to sample. This sample table will be hosted and I would ideally like a large a variety, and from all the States and Territories if possible. If you can send a bottle (or two) for this please provide a product description and some back ground notes.

If you are able to provide product for this event please send, rather urgently, to our event planners at

In the meantime, if you have a relationship with your Federal Member of Parliament, please contact them and encourage them to attend the Launch of Parliamentary Friends of Australian Spirits. They have already received an invitation, but the local touch is very important.

Fair and sustainable tax reform

As previously reported we have lodged our Pre-Budget submission with the Federal Treasury. In the submission, the ADA calls on the Australian Government to increase the current excise refund scheme limit from $100,000 to $350,000 and to cut the spirits excise rate to the brandy excise rate or freeze the spirits excise indexation for three years so Australian distillers can maintain and create employment and supply chain opportunities in regional and rural Australia in their recovery from COVID-19. The submission was lodged on behalf of members of the Australian Distillers Association and Spirits & Cocktails Australia who together represent over 90% of spirits producers involved in the manufacture, marketing and sale of spirits throughout Australia. Our industry directly supports over 5,000 jobs in 84 Federal electorates and supports a further 15,000 jobs throughout the supply chain, from primary producers to the hospitality and tourism sectors.

To support this we will have an ongoing campaign that requires your help.

If you have not already done so, please complete the survey by clicking here.

In the coming days, some of you may be contacted to participate in one of two other information gathering processes. Some of you may be asked to complete an in depth interview that will be conducted by an independent market research firm. If you are asked to participate, please do so.

Others may be asked to provide some information for Case studies to help us in the advocacy campaigns. If you are asked to participate in either of these please remember it is voluntary.
