Big Win for Victorian Craft distillers
Last week’s Victorian Budget announced that that distillery door producers in Victoria will qualify for a distillery door grant.

The budget includes a $160m tourism package incorporating the establishment of a $10 million distillery door grant scheme. Over the next two years, funding will be offered to local distillers who attract tourists and create jobs through their distillery door operations.

This investment will directly benefit the 104 distilleries located throughout Victoria, who buy produce from local farmers, attract tourists to the regions, and create jobs, both within their own operations and in the services and supply chains.
Chris Pratt, Australian Distillers Association Victorian spokesperson and owner of Kilderkin Distillery in Ballarat said:

“This is wonderful news for craft Victorian Distillers. We are very pleased the government has recognised the contribution of the craft spirits industry to the Victorian Economy, especially in regional areas where many distilleries are based. We thank the Andrews Government for their ongoing support.”

Dave Irwin, President of Spirits Victoria Association and owner of Patient Wolf in Southbank Melbourne, said:

“This is a great result for Victorian producers and consumers. This significant grant will help grow a burgeoning spirits Industry. Spirit producers will be able to employ more people and positively impact the farmers and businesses that support them.”
The ADA has entered discussions with the Victorian Treasurer to establish a working party to assist in establishing criteria that allows for the distribution of $10 million in grants over 2 years in a way that is transparent, sustainable and responsible – and most importantly, meets the stated objective to support and enhance Victoria’s distillery industry.

Parliament is back

Since the Budget announcement, Federal Parliament has been sitting again and we continue to engage with politicians to thank them for the rebate increase, and to advocate on issues that affect the industry.

I have started discussions for the next Parliamentary Friends of Australian Spirits event, which is planned to be held in conjunction with an industry workshop – more information to come on this soon.

Many thanks to those distilleries who have written to their local MP to thank them for supporting the call for fair and sustainable tax reform. If you have not yet done so, please write to your Federal MP and:

  • thank them for the increase to the rebate
  • tell them what you expect or hope to do with the money you will now have available to invest in your business
  • invite them to your distillery for a photo.

Please let me know if your Federal MP agrees to come for a photo opportunity.
