Literacy News for November

November is Financial Literacy Month

As a former accountant, I believe everyone needs to have a strong foundation in Financial Literacy. The Federal Government has some fantastic resources to help with this process.

There are weekly subthemes that focus on the benefits of money management, including reducing debt and saving for the future.

  • Week 1 – Start with a budget
  • Week 2 – Live within your means
  • Week 3 – Know your rights and responsibilities
  • Week 4 – Have a savings plan
  • Week 5 – Review your finances

Visit the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada website for information and resources, including the Canadian Financial Literacy Database, a Financial Literacy Self-assessment Quiz , and infographics.

Tri-Cities Refugee Support Forum

On November 2nd, there was a Refugee Support Forum hosted by TCLIP - the Tri-Cities Local Immigration Partnership. It was attended by about 60 people representing various levels of governments and many Tri-Cities service providers whose services are directly or indirectly related to refugees.  Presentations were made by a number of the organizations involved with TCLIP. Attendees learned more about the Tri-Cities' approach to refugees as well as the current landscape of settlement services for refugees. We then had table discussions on strengths and opportunities with regard to serving refugees. It was an enlightening experience for all!! Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend!
