Spring is in the Air - Spring into Literacy

Spring is all about new beginnings, and there is no better time of year to refresh your skills and focus on lifelong learning. Here are a few fun ways to keep your literacy skills sharp: (thanks to ABC Life Literacy for these ideas) abclifeliteracy.ca

~Get back to nature. Teach the kids how to plant a garden or take them on a hike and see if they can point out all the different species of trees. Remember, learning happens in everything we do!
~Baking is a great family literacy activity. Find a fun new spring recipe and make the dish together to keep numeracy and literacy skills sharp.  See below for some ideas on how Food and Literacy go together
~Celebrate Earth Day! In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), do some research to find out how you can help take better care of the planet. Why not create a compost in your backyard?
~Increase your financial literacy skills. During this tax season take a course to learn more about RRSPs, RESPs, budgeting, investments or banking. (Or check out some great financial literacy tips and resources at www.smallchangeaddsup.ca )

What do Food and Literacy have to do with each other?

Family mealtimes support the development of literacy skills because there is a great fit between preparing food, eating meals and learning together as a family.  Here are two resources that give ideas and tools and how to use family mealtimes as fun learning experiences.
