Armed with a unique, process-oriented approach to working on-screen, teachers and actors Welker White and Damian Young bring intensives to professional artists as well as training programs throughout the United States and abroad.

The Moving Frame has taught at NYU Grad Acting, Brown/Trinity Rep, American Conservatory Theater, Atlantic Acting School, Columbia University, Southern Methodist University, Florida State University, Otterbein, Wesleyan, Emerson, Syracuse, The Actors Center, The Freeman Studio, as well as numerous other institutions.

The Moving Frame's intensives balance the theoretical and the practical, and deepen participants’ understanding of the medium: how onscreen stories are expressed and received, the role of dialogue, tools to break down film scenes, and how the actor and the camera are engaged in a parallel process of storytelling.

Essentials of the Medium

This 5-day Intensive aims to demystify the medium and provide actors with concrete tools to unlock authentic behavior that reads onscreen. Utilizing a unique, process-oriented approach, actors are immersed in the language and grammar of cinematic stories. The intensive begins with a series of original, short-form exercises that are designed to highlight key principles in screen acting. The week progresses to a hands-on exploration of shooting, with actors engaged fully in the collaborative process. Along the way we will examine scripted text and film clips to aid us in laying a firmer foundation from which to build.

Exploring the Shooting of Cinematic Scenes

For Actors

This 4-day Intensive—created especially for the seasoned film/tv actor as well as professional actors who have taken previous Moving Frame workshops—offers a deep-dive into the shooting of cinematic scenes. Over 4 days actors will work in paired scenes, re-visited twice over the course of the week. Aided by a professional cinematographer, we will focus on how to move through coverage with a greater understanding of the process, enabling you to at once identify and fulfill a director’s vision while also exploring how to let go of the inclination to ‘perform’ and allow for a freer, more present, you. The workshop offers a chance to play, explore, and take new risks in a wholly supportive shooting environment.

Approaches to Teaching Screen Acting

Flexible Attendance throughout the 9 Days
For Teachers

Welker and Damian are launching a new concurrent workshop for acting teachers available both in-person or online through a multi-camera set up. Teachers can follow along during both workshops as we lead actors through a wide-ranging exploration of cinematic stories through the use of individually recorded exercises; screenplay analysis; large-group exercises that examine the camera and the actor in a parallel process of storytelling; as well as breaking down real-time understanding of how and why scenes are shot the way they are.

Teachers will receive preparatory reading material, video clips, and a live pedagogy session, as well as a curriculum map that outlines the principles that are layered into the work (which may also form the basis of a semester’s worth of ‘On-Camera’ curriculum), in addition to scheduled Q and A sessions with Welker and Damian throughout the two weeks to reflect on the work as it unfolds.

For teachers participating online, the full workshop will be streamed using an in-room multi-camera setup that also includes a live direct feed from the shooting camera used during exercises and shooting of scenes. This unique setup allows participants to enter into the work through the camera lens itself. Attendance online is flexible, with participants encouraged to come and go as needed.

Meet Welker & Damian

WELKER WHITE is an actor and educator with deep roots in theater, film and television. Welker recently completed shooting her fourth film for Martin Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon, as well as a leading role in the independent film Crookedfinger. Other select film credits include The 40-Year Old Version, Bad Education, Goodfellas, Eat Pray Love, Dead Poet’s Society, and The Irishman, opposite Al Pacino. Onstage Welker has originated roles by playwrights Lisa Kron, Craig Lucas, Sam Shepard, Mac Wellman, David Ives, and many others. Welker holds an MFA in Directing from Brooklyn College, where she teaches in the MFA Acting program. Welker has been awarded a Fulbright Specialist designation for her teaching. www.welkerwhite.com

DAMIAN YOUNG is a career actor with over 100 credited film and television appearances. His work spans the films of Hal Hartley and cult favorite Nickelodeon’s Pete and Pete, to roles in Ozark, The Comeback, House of Cards, Homeland, and many others. Feature films include Birdman, Catfight, I Care A Lot, and Trial of the Chicago Seven (SAG award winner). Damian has worked extensively in theater, both on and off-Broadway, as well as regionally.
