All in the mind: productivity, mindfulness, and putting things in perspective

What's on our minds in October...

The Productive Mind

It’s time to admit we have an unhealthy obsession with productivity. We buy books on it, we share “secrets” to it, we buy into every app or tool that promises to maximize it. But like any other attainable quest for perfection, we never really feel as though we are productive enough.

This month we looked into how we currently define productivity, why it’s time to reframe the conversation, and how mindfulness can change what it means to be “productive” as a creative entrepreneur.

Check out our blog post on The Myth of Productivity and discover some of the smart ideas behind The Energy Project.

NYC-Paris Business Exchange

Interested in a European presence for your business? NYCEDC and Paris & Co. have partnered to develop an exchange program to bring NYC-based companies to Paris and vice versa. Winning companies will receive six months of free co-working space, mentorship, networking, and business development support in their exchange city. NYC entrepreneurs will also learn about French regulatory and immigration requirements, as well as financial and tax incentives in Paris. Très bien!

Information and application available here.

Mind + Body

Mellow minds with Melomind

Mindfulness meets tech in Melomind, a headset that detects your stress levels through special sensors, then delivers a personalized meditation session that relaxes you in 15 minutes. You track your calmness levels through a mobile app. At $299, you might want to hack it with a Spotify "chill" station and earphones, but if charting your brain waves sounds cool to you, then we say go for it.
YoYo Mat

Going YoYo for yoga

Deemed the “snap bracelet of exercise,” YoYo Mats patented self-rolling yoga mat features a custom boning designed to serve two functions: to hold the mat completely flat while you work out, and to roll it back up in a *snap* when you turn it over. Novelty aside, the mat is also made from an anti-slip biodegradable cell material that doesn’t absorb sweat or germs. Be the first to own this snappy product by pre-ordering it on their Kickstarter page.

Adding it all up...

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you."
            —Anne Lamott

It’s easy to lose perspective when we’re caught up in the day-to-day of work. When stress takes its toll, it's time to recharge and refocus. Grab a cup of tea and a good novel, get the yoga mat out, or take the family out for some apple picking. Find your flow in the things that bring you joy, and you’ll see how it inspires you to bring your best to work.
