What's on our minds this month

It’s hard to turn on the news or scroll through a Facebook feed these days without encountering nothing but doom and gloom. But despite a turbulent 2016, we’ve still got a future ahead of us to forge. It will be a year of big changes—some good and some bad—but we as business leaders can still weather these times through optimism, resiliency, and standing up for our values.

This year, we will be adding the “+Impact Corner” to our monthly newsletters. Each month, we will highlight organizations that represent values we share at Creative Business, and share ways businesses and individuals are creating positive impact in their communities. If you have ideas and tips you want to share for future newsletters, please send them to us!

Big changes for business regulations

Small business owners should be aware of some new rules coming into place in 2017, including earlier tax form due dates for 1099s and partnerships, minimum wage increases, and health reimbursement plans for small employers. Read on to find out what you need to know.

Sisters (and brothers) in solidarity

It’s never been a more important time to speak out as a woman, whether that’s for equal pay, the right to family planning and reproductive health care, or family-friendly work policies for new mothers and fathers. The Women’s March on Washington is a step forward in that direction, bringing together the voices of hundreds of thousands to unapologetically fight for all to have equal rights.

How to take action: If you can’t make it to the march, or one of the many sister marches around the world, you can still support the cause through your donation or by donating to one of the many partner organizations helping women around the world, including Planned Parenthood, Equality Now, Human Rights Campaign and more.

Be the best you can "B" for NYC

More than 600 New York City businesses have taken up the challenge to be the "Best for NYC" by taking the B Corps impact assessment and making pledges to improve their business practices in order to make a positive impact for their workers, the community, and the environment.

How to take action: Take the free assessment to see how your business stacks up, then make a pledge to make a difference. The website offers free tools and best practice guides to help you work towards your goals.

Adding it all up...

"Change only happens when ordinary people get involved and they get engaged, and they come together to demand it."
           —Barack Obama

Last year, we adopted the one-word resolution of Build for our newsletters. This year, we think the most appropriate word is Action. Essentially, our aspirations are only as good as the actions we take to achieve them.

As we face what will be an unpredictable year ahead, we will need to constantly remind ourselves not to become complacent, not to allow our lives to be defined by hatred, bigotry, sexism, or xenophobia. Being business leaders, we have a special role to play to stand up for what we believe is right, to protect the unprotected from bullying, and to uphold our core values despite what changes around us.
