Season of giving

What's on our minds this month

The time to give and not give up

November has been a tumultuous month, the climax of a very divisive year for America. In spite of the negativity (perhaps even because of it), we at Creative Business have only strengthened our resolve to making a positive impact in the world around us.

What can business leaders do in such times? Here are five things that companies can do to reinforce their values and commit to social impact in the coming years ahead.

What's happening with the overtime law?

Many of you have been concerned by the upcoming changes to the law that raises the pay threshold for salaried workers to receive overtime. Originally set to start on Dec. 1, a federal judge has since issued an injunction blocking its implementation, although an appeal is expected.

We spoke with employment attorney Kevin Doherty regarding the current and proposed law—read on to find out the most important overtime regulations that employers need to know.

Introducing our emerging artist program

Creative Business is excited to introduce “Tipping Point,” our new business mentorship program for emerging artists. The program is targeted at up-and-coming artists, galleries, and other art industry businesses in need of financial strategy, light bookkeeping, tax guidance, and more. Learn more here.

Ways to Give Back

Interested in volunteering, but not sure how? VolunteerMatch matches you to nonprofits for causes you care about, whether that’s education, arts and culture, LGBT, animals, or more. Simply tell the site where you’re are, what you care about, and discover volunteer opportunities in your area. They also offer business solutions for companies who want to organize volunteer programs for employees.

Kiva micro-lending

This holiday season, consider funding a Kiva loan to support entrepreneurship around the world. The site features thousands of micro-loan opportunities (usually between $25-75) for business owners in sectors including free trade, social enterprise, and more. Lenders can support causes they care about, and the loan is typically repaid back within 12-24 months. If you want to make sure your dollar goes the extra mile, consider supporting a Kiva Zip loan, a 0% interest loan specifically targeted at American entrepreneurs.
