The fourth in a series of occasional Prochoice Highway updates.

Heading South

The Highway headed south in October. On Saturday 5th, Alison and Nikki, above, met in Rotorua for some street campaigning. We talked to 20 to 30 people, with lots of positive discussion and comments. Thanks Nikki! The next few days saw more street outreach in Whakatane and Gisborne.

Upcoming Events

We’ve got a couple of major events coming up and we hope you can help spread the word.
Friday 18 Oct., 5:30-7pm: Palmerston North Library, 4 The Square. A book launch and author discussion with Alison McCulloch and Dame Margaret Sparrow. The event will be MC’d by Deborah Russell and is in the library’s Sound and Vision zone. Here’s a link to a downloadable flyer for the event.

Above is an image of the coverage in the weekly Wairarapa News. Click here to access a PDF of the whole article, and this will link you to a downloadable flier for the event

So there I was, in a lovely warm room with the Highway stuff for a meeting at the Women’s Centre in Hastings. Me, the stuff, the heater. And that was it. I waited for 30 minutes in case someone showed, and was halfway out the door when I bumped into two young women who said they were late for the ALRANZ meeting. Exciting! I led them back into the meeting room and we sat down to chat. Yup, you guessed it: they were a couple of extremely dedicated anti-abortion activists who protest outside Hastings hospital every week. They’d heard about the meeting via ALRANZ’s Facebook page (which has seen an upsurge in anti-choice activity lately). We talked for 45 minutes, and I got one of those rubber fetus dolls. So, that was Hastings. Luckily, in Napier, I met up with three local prochoice supporters for a great discussion over tea and asparagus rolls. Thanks Suzanne, Maxine and Helen.

2014 Body Politics Calendar

This is a joint production of ALRANZ and the Prochoice Highway, made by Zenaida Beatson and Alison McCulloch. It’s a visual romp through some of our recent history on issues including contraception access, sex education, “stroppy strippers”, motherhood, the battle over the homosexual law reform bill and abortion rights activism. It also includes an info page that explains your legal rights around sexual and reproductive health issues. A steal at $15 and you can find out more or order here.

Anti TV Ads

There has been a flurry of discussion on Facebook and other social media about a series of anti-choice ads running on TVNZ, both on the television machine and online via TVNZ On Demand. Stevie, a pro-choice supporter in Dunedin, managed to grab most (though not the start) of one of the ads and she put it up on YouTube. There are apparently several adds with different themes.
