...the perfect birthday gift!

Commission paintings are always an exciting challenge.  A little scary too for this one as not only was there a deadline (the client's husband's birthday at the end of July), but because last month I had four back to back shows in Central California (all 4-day weekends away from the studio), so there was essentially very little time to work on it. Then I had the news in the last week that the husband would be away on business for a couple days, which made it the best time to sneak the large painting into the house - two days before I thought I would need to deliver it.
Often for commissions, with the client's permission I'll do two, so there's a choice as to which one is preferred,  then sell the second one.  This time, I knew from the beginning there wasn't time for that, so I had get it right first time.
It was also exciting though to be able to give progress reports via email, so she could see the work unfold.  It was I believe, as exciting a journey for her as for me; and an ideal time to document the journey for those who have never seen it.
I put the distilled trip in a pdf on my website here: Honeymoon

August is going to be mostly a month indoors, as far as art is concerned.  I have a couple solo shows in alternate spaces, one fair at the end of the month, and six classes. This month does have a little wiggle room especially in the first couple weeks, so if you've been toying with the idea of a commission painting, now's a good time to start talking about it.  Or if you're stuck indoors in the desert and you and a bunch of friends had thought about a Paint-and-Wine evening but can't find one that fits, I am available for private evenings and afternoons.  You might just have more fun than you thought possible!  email me at
