Getting Books into At-Risk Readers' Hands
Greenville residents did a wonderful job this past Christmas supporting a Holiday Book Drive for the benefit of the Augustine Literacy Project in Upstate South Carolina sponsored by the Barnes & Noble bookstore on Haywood Road. Thanks to Greenvillians who donated more than 1,000 shiny, new children's books, Augustine is getting them into the hands of at-risk readers. Each Augustine student received four books at Christmas and receives another attractive book each month with their lessons. At the end of the year, they will receive three more books to take home for the summer.
Please bring your friends and join us for pizza and fun Thursday, March 27 at Your Pie, 1461 Woodruff Road, 5 - 8 p.m. If you mention us at the register, they will donate a portion of the proceeds to us. Enjoy custom crafted fresh hot pizza, meet some tutors, hear heart-warming stories, see some of the materials we use! You can't lose.
Sally Stillwagen shared some pictures of her student Brandon using a vowel glove.
Tutors enjoyed meeting each other, and sharing ideas as well as stories at our February Brunch Bunches at Paneras. The hot coffee and yummy pastries didn't hurt either! Last year, Augustine tutors delivered over 700 hours of reading lessons to at-risk children in the upstate area.  This year, 23 tutors are presently serving 25 students. You rock!
We are very grateful to Bill and Laura Pelham for a handsome donation of $500 to the Augustine Literacy Project. If you would like to make a donation, please send a check written to Redeemer Presbyterian Church, with "Augustine" written on the memo line to Redeemer, 6150 Old Buncombe Road, Greenville, SC 29609.
Help Us Help Others!
Our biggest need is for more volunteers to become skilled tutors. We have current unmet requests for help. A parent recently wrote,
"I have been trying to get my 6 year old son a tutor for almost 2 years now and have not been able to find anything that isn't twice as high as my mortgage payment.... If anyone there knows of anywhere I can try, please help me help my son before it is too late to save the school year. He is a wonderful, smart little boy with the biggest heart I have ever seen. I just can't stand to watch him get so discouraged everyday when he is trying his best to do his homework and doesn't know how."
If you are interested in learning to help, or know someone who might be, please contact us through www.augustineproject-upstatesc. org, or augustine.upstatesc@gmail.com, or call Maxine Bennett at 864.270.9488.
