Celebrating our 25th year with the Florida Theatre!

The Community Nutcracker's first production of the Nutcracker Ballet premiered December 13, 1992 at the historic Florida Theatre. 2016 marks our 25th anniversary of performing at this iconic theater. The  Florida Theatre's towering ceilings and grand architecture make it the perfect setting for our Nutcracker Ballet. The wonderful and talented staff and crew are an added benefit!

We had the privilege of interviewing a few of our longtime Florida Theater team members, many of whom have been with us from the start. Continue reading below to hear what our production means to them.

The thing I enjoy most about The Community Nutcracker are the kids. I have been fortunate enough to watch many of these community dancers, first participate  in the Nutcracker,  and now bring their kids to dance in the Nutcracker.  I have enjoyed working with the many creative directors, and the Nutcracker Board members over the years.

Saul has been with us from the start!

This year will be my fifth Community Nutcracker, since arriving in Jacksonville in the fall of 2012. I don’t have a particular or singular memory of the Community Nutcracker (except maybe for the time that Mark drove his car off the wall of the parking lot!) but there are several things about the Community Nutcracker that have always impressed me. One of those things is the spirit of community forged by many different dance studios combining their forces to create this production. You don’t see dance studios who probably compete with each other for students putting their competition aside like that too often. Another thing that has always impressed me is the spirit of generosity behind the production. The  board members really put time and energy into this production to make it happen, filling important roles that would typically be filled by paid staff, and all of that effort results in net profits which are distributed in the community to deserving charities. We hear the title “Community Nutcracker” every year, but it’s worth stopping to understand what that actually means! As a nonprofit ourselves, It’s been our honor to be associated.

First and foremost, I enjoy being involved with the Community Nutcracker  because it is a beloved holiday tradition, for both participants and patrons alike! This seamless performance provides our community with a quality experience for performers from many dance schools and for our patrons pure holiday enjoyment. I hope the public is aware that the  memorable performances onstage support worthy charities in our community.

On a personal note, my first teacher, Mervyn Rickard, along with Thelma Baggs, Betty Marks and Marta Jackson conceived the idea of a “community” production highlighting the talents of local dancers, directors, and production staff who would work together to create a first-class experience and worked hard to bring that dream into reality. As a performer in those original productions, I can say that the opportunity to come together with other dedicated dancers and participate in a full-length ballet, knowing that our audiences were also treasuring the performances was an incredibly rewarding experience. For twenty-five years, the Community Nutcracker has maintained and furthered these original ideals. BRAVO!

Auditions for our 25th Anniversary production will be held August 26th & 27th.
