Footnotes Vol. 5
Welcome to our final newsletter for 2014
This month we are thrilled to announce The Footpath Library joins  the fundraising platform Promise or Pay which you can read more about in this edition. As Christmas approaches and we think of those less fortunate than ourselves, you may like to make a donation to brighten the lives of our homeless customers. I hope you all have a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas.

Sarah Garnett, Founder
Meet Lothar, Perth’s Branch Manager
Lothar has been volunteering as Perth's Branch Manager for the last six months. He has always been around libraries and books and wants to share his adventures in reading as far as possible with all walks of life. He kindly took the time to chat with us on why he became a volunteer and how books can open minds.
Anti-social behaviour – cause or consequence of homelessness?
Sadly anti-social behaviours such as drug and alcohol abuse are often associated with homelessness. The question is what comes first? According to a series of studies from Northumbria becoming homelessness may lead to anti-social behaviours, mental health issues and substance abuse rather than the other way around.
Community connectedness is key for law firm, Clayton Utz
Clayton Utz has generously been supporting The Footpath Library for more than seven years. They not only provide us with pro bono legal assistance but they have also provided grants from the Clayton Utz Foundation as well as in-kind and volunteering support of the firm and their staff. National Manager - Community Connect, Lauren O’Shaughnessy explains how the corporate sector can play a vital role in enabling charitable organisations serve the community.
Do you have an Epic! Story to share?
We will be launching our Epic! Short Story Competition for young people in Term 1 of 2015.  The competition will be open to primary and secondary students with great prizes to be won.  The theme for 2015 is “Home is....." so it’s time to get those laptops charged and pencils sharpened!
A promising way to help the community
Sue Stewart
Wish you could keep your resolution to eat healthier, do more exercise or stop biting your nails? It’s time to put your money where your mouth is and commit to your goal on the new Promise or Pay website. Founder, Jay Boolkin, explains where this idea came from and how it can help you achieve your personal goals while assisting the wider community at the same time.

Give the joy of a book this Christmas
Photography by sarilonka - http://craftegem.blogspot.com
Children in homeless families are now the largest single group who seek support from the homeless service system. On a basic level, homelessness for children means missing out. Missing out on the things that other children take for granted such as a safe place to sleep every night, school excursions, regular nutritious meals and the opportunity to bring friends home after school. Please donate $5 to The Footpath Library and give the joy of a book to a homeless child this Christmas.
A Christmas message from the Grinch

“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!”

― Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
