    January 2015

from Rebecca

The month of December has been a bitter sweet one. Thrilled for our daughter, Erin, and her D13 cheer team winning an undefeated National championship title on December 13th.  On December 14th, our family, being separated because of the competition, I chose to honor our 2nd year without Chase by making a beautiful cross in his honor. As you can imagine, Chase was with us in Florid. As I chose the cross, the number on the back was #8. Of course, it was. As I was picking out the marbles and sea glass, I found this tiny little red heart. Always a sign to know my beautiful boy is by my side.

We came home for a few days then headed back to FL for the holiday. Running away from my troubles to the warm weather of Florida was a blessing. Life is better in flip flops! We relaxed and recharged our batteries for the upcoming events of this new year. The plans are in place for my physical transformation as I have been on this Birthday2Birthday journey for just a short time. I'm looking forward to Spring, bike riding and training for the 5k runs and ultimately that Sprint Tri. I've upped my goal from just wanting to finish to wanting to place in my age group. A huge goal but I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me.  I've come this far, so to infinity and beyond!

Race4Chase Kid's Triathlon Program
Expands to 11 in 2015:

M.O.U signing on January 29th

CMAK Sandy Hook Memorial Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that it will be expanding the Race4Chase Kids Triathlon Program to eleven locations for 2015.  Our initial three program sites (Brookfield, Trumbull and Waterbury) will be joined by an additional five sites (Southington-Cheshire, Middletown, Torrington, Westbrook and Milford) in Connecticut.  We will also have three new sites in the Fort Mill-Rock Hill, SC area through the Upper Palmetto YMCAs and avid Race4Chase supporters in the region.  Through these sites, we will make close to 400 new Race4Chase triathletes by the end of next summer.

There was significant interest to become a part of the Race4Chase Kids Triathlon program during our application process.  In making the selection for new sites in 2015, CMAK tried to balance the high interest with our desire to expand at a responsible rate, so as to make each site successful and meaningful.  That being said, the expansion to eleven sites is more than we originally planned due to the enthusiasm and high quality of the sites selected.  There were many more qualified sites that could not be accommodated this year, but we look forward to evaluating further expansion for 2016.

To commemorate this exciting news, there will be an M.O.U. signing ceremony taking place at the Mattatuck Museum, 144 West Main Street, next to the Greater Waterbury YMCA on January 29th, 2015 where agreements will be signed with the eleven programs.  There will also be a short ceremony celebrating the support provided by CMAK to the GW YMCA preschool program through a $20,000 grant to support over 120 families struggling to afford this critical program.

Race4Chase Boston Marathon Team Selected:

CMAK Sandy Hook Memorial Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of Zoe Schwalje and Jonathan Pleva to be members of the CMAK Boston Marathon team through the generosity of the John Hancock Non-Profit Program.  John Hancock selected CMAK as a recipient of two charity bibs which allow entry into the Boston Marathon without the requirement to meet the time qualifying standards.  CMAK selected Zoe and Jonathan from the many applicants that expressed interest to run for the team.  Zoe made a passionate appeal to run for a cause that brings triumph over tragedy while demonstrating her commitment to raise awareness and funds through events in the past two years.  Jonathan has been a strong supporter of CMAK, participating in many Race4Chase events while coordinating the support of the Boy Scouts of America where Chase was an active participant.  There were many other excellent candidates and we hope that we may be able to secure additional bibs that are not claimed by other charities at the end of this month for those on our waitlist.  Otherwise, we hope to be a part of the John Hancock Program for any years to come, so there should be opportunities to join the team in 2016 and beyond.

Zoe and Jonathan are joining Amanda Jacob, Erin Flanagan and John Williams on the CMAK Boston Marathon team.  Amanda ran the 2013 Boston Marathon in Chase’s honor, finishing just thirty minutes prior to the tragic bombings that took place.  John also ran in the 2013 race and then dedicated his return to the Boston Marathon in 2014 in Chase’s honor.  Erin, who is running a marathon in every State in Chase’s honor, has chosen the Boston Marathon for her 8th State. She will be running the Disney Marathon this weekend (see article below).  CMAK is seeking additional runners that have already gained admission to the race to join the team as a way to support our cause.  Anyone who knows such runners, please have them contact CMAK at

Zoe and Jonathan have committed to raising a minimum of $5,000.00 for CMAK through their participation on the CMAK Boston Marathon team.  Each of the team members is actively raising funds through their participation.  Please refer to the Race4Chase Boston Marathon Team to make a donation to any of the runners fundraising pages and to follow along on the progress of the fundraising.  For those in the area of Hampstead, NH, Zoe has organized a bake sale to support her Boston campaign on Sunday January 18th from 11am to 3pm at the Hampstead Memorial Gym (2 West Street, Hampstead, N.H.). Her cookies will be worth the trip!

Best Wishes for safe and healthy training leading up to the big race!
Race4Chase at the Disney Marathon

The Disney Marathon, being held this weekend in Orlando, Florida, will be an extra special event for CMAK this year.  We will have four athletes competing in the Marathon including three Race4Chase batons. Erin Flanagan has chosen Disney as her 7th State race and will be handing out Baton #12 to a deserving fellow athlete as she does at each of her races.  Ivo Louvado, who received the #10 baton from Erin at the Baltimore Marathon in October, will also be competing at Disney.  He has already decided to pass the baton on to his fellow police officer also running at this event.  They will be joined by Dyan Coker who has been competing this Fall with the #4 Baton received from Lee Whittaker.  The Disney Marathon will be the culmination of her competitions and she will pass the baton along at the race. Please join me in wishing all four athletes the best of luck in the competition and may Chase be wish you stride for stride to the finish.

We ask all Race4Chase athletes to give advanced warning of competitions they are entering so that CMAK can try to alert any other Race4chasers competing at the same venue.  Also forward pictures of competitions to so they can be included in newsletters and website galleries.  Any stories surrounding these activities would be greatly appreciated.
