Dear friends,
Warm greetings to you all. I hope this email finds you well.
Thank you for your love, support, prayers and partnership with Our Neighbours Ministry and all that’s happening here in Bulawayo. You are greatly appreciated!
I have a few brief updates that I wanted to share with you at this time:
In a recent meeting at Hearts of Love (1 of the 5 key ministry areas that make up Our Neighbours Ministry (ONM)), I asked them to share of a recent highlight. They shared about Sharon (* not her real name), and the excitement of seeing the major change in her life over the last year as they have journeyed with her. Sharon was unfortunately born HIV positive, and her father passed away 6 years ago. The Hearts of Love team have been assisting Sharon and her family (her mother and 5 siblings) for about 8 years, mainly with occasional food and health support. The family live about 20km from Bulawayo, and Sharon’s mother, the provider for the family, isn’t employed, but seeks temporary cleaning jobs or anything she can get. As you can imagine, as a widow with 6 kids, this can be very challenging, and especially the times when Sharon’s mother is sick herself and can’t therefore work.
Sharon has had numerous health problems throughout her life, and came to us very sick about 9 months ago, having gone down to only about 40kgs in weight. Since this time Hearts of Love have been assisting her with the means for her to obtain transport to and from town for her essential medical treatment, and also with various other medical tests and requirements. It has been great to see Sharon’s health and weight improve so much over this period!
I mentioned in our last update that we were praying through some modifications to the vision for Lighthouse Christian Academy that ONM runs. As we’ve prayed about this, consulted our partners for Lighthouse, Edge Foundation, and others, it’s been exciting to see how God has led us to a new modified vision that we believe will be great for the future, and a blessing to the kids already part of Lighthouse, and many more children. This new vision is summarised in the Lighthouse newsletter linked here This newsletter is from last term, and there’s a whole heap more photos and other news about the students for you to also enjoy!

One and a half weeks ago we had the ‘sad but happy’ experience of seeing Thabani from Isaiah’s Babies Home being able to leave Isaiah’s to go and live with his grandmother.

We’ve been in regular contact again with Trust recently, who used to stay with us at North End Home after we first built relationships with him when he was a young boy living on the streets of Bulawayo. He was reunited with his family after staying at North End Home for a while, and currently stays with his step-mother (his father is alive but not staying with them much, but his mother is late). He’s been selling DVD’s in Harare to seek to make a living, but became really unwell a while ago. He had one operation, and desperately needed another. This next operation required at least 2 ‘units’ of blood before the operation could be performed, costing US$372 (this must be paid upfront in Zimbabwe), as well as many other costs for the operation and other requirements. And, they had outstanding costs from the previous operation.
His step-mother had raised some of the money needed but they were still a long way short, and out of desperation, Trust contacted us. As we raised awareness of his situation with some of our friends and partners, it was wonderful to see people offer to support Trust at this time to get the treatment he desperately needs. We continue on the journey with him and his family.
For those from Australia who support us via our partnership with Global Development Group, please note that an ‘N’ has been added to our project number. Our project number is now J301N, for Our Neighbours Community Project - Zimbabwe.
So, I hope these updates give you a few further snapshots of what you are part of!
We are so thankful that God has led us to love and serve in the various ways that Our Neighbours Ministry does. We are so thankful for the many many people who are part of all of this. And we are so thankful for all the relationships.
Until next time,
Love Martin
