December sale: give anarchy!

10% off everything; 30% off for Jura financial supporters

Looking for some unusual end-of-year presents? Why not give a beautiful book or a radical DVD? Give your friends and family (or yourself!) the inspiration and ideas needed to change the world. You'll be spreading consciousness and supporting your local anarchist space. (And you'll be in good company - like the 11,000 people who have recently joined the Amazon Christmas boycott.)

Wouldn't your nan look good in a General Strike t-shirt ($28)? Surely your workmates would like to count down the days to the weekend on the Revolutionary Labour History Calendar ($24), published by the IWW, filled with images and excerpts from Joe Hill's best-loved labour anthems? Perhaps you and your friends/lovers would like to cuddle up and watch the Wisconsin Rising DVD ($25) which documents the massive workers' resistance movement in 2011? Or you could wish your favourite teacher happy summer solstice with a gift of Anthropology, Ecology and Anarchism: A Brian Morris Reader ($32), which explores anthropology and ecology in relation to anarchism and other traditions.

This December, everything at Jura is 10% off - books, t-shirts, CDs and DVDs. Our prices are already low because our mark-up is minimal and we're all volunteers. This month is even better! Also, Jura financial supporters get 30% off. Become a financial supporter by setting up a monthly donation into our bank account of $10 (regular) or $20 (passionate). Or pay a year in advance ($120 or $240). We'd also love you to invite your friends to the sale (via Facebook or in real life). And we're happy to do mail order - just email us.

Second-hand books for as little as 40c each

Jura has also just received a donation of over 5,000 second-hand books, and we want you to have them! There are all sorts, but with an emphasis on fiction, history and legal books from the 1960s-1980s. These second-hand books will only be available for December; in January they're going to a reseller. Prices are:
  • $5 for 1 book
  • $10 for up to 10 books
  • $20 for up to 50 books

Gig this Sunday arvo at Jura

This Sunday, Jura will host a hardcore gig with international guests Full of Hell, plus Idylls, Machina Genova, and Gvrlls. All welcome. Facebook event.
5-9pm, Sunday 7 December at Jura.

End-of-year party & hours

Jura has been going for 37 years. Woo! 37 years of spreading anarchist ideas in Sydney, organising discussions, gigs and actions. That's worth celebrating. So we're having a party, and you're invited! There'll be food and drinks, tours of the building and anecdotes of days gone past. 3pm Sunday 14 December. Facebook event.

Jura will be open as normal for the next few weeks:
  • 2-7pm every Thursday and Friday
  • 12-5pm every Saturday and Sunday
Plus we'll be open for special last minute present shopping:
  • 12-5pm on Monday 22 December
  • 12-5pm on Tuesday 23 December
Jura will be closed from 24 December until 21 January. We will reopen on Thursday 22 January 2015.

10,000 new anarchist leaflets

Every year at stalls, actions and in Jura, we give out thousands of our 'introduction to anarchism' leaflet. As part of a conversation, we find it a useful tool for introducing people to anarchist ideas. So this year we decided to rewrite, redesign and reprint the leaflet in bulk. The new version is a colourful one-page introduction to anarchist ideas and Jura, aimed at people who are interested but haven't had much contact with anarchism. It includes images from Jura events and our poster archive. Can you help us give them to people? Do you know a local place which would be willing to have a few? Would you give one to a friend? Email us and we'll post you one (or one hundred!) or drop in to the shop and grab a stack.

Summer of (library) love

We've been working hard renovating the Jura library, and we want to re-open it early next year. But we need your help to make this happen. Please come to a working bee - you'll learn neat skills like floor-sanding, ceiling-painting, shelf-making and book-sorting. Even a couple of hours would be much appreciated!
  • 11am-5pm, Sunday 21 December
  • 11am-5pm, Sunday 11 January
  • 11am-5pm, Saturday 17 January
  • 11am-5pm, Sunday 18 January
  • 11am-5pm, Sunday 25 January
We also welcome people to come along to our meetings, see how we work and contribute ideas. The next meeting is 2pm Saturday 31 January 2015.

Anarchist bookfair in 2015?

The first-ever Sydney Anarchist bookfair held in April 2014 was a great success. About 700 people attended, there were 30 stalls and over a dozen talks. (Check out our photos and reflections). So we at Jura reckon we should do it again next year. The last bookfair was organised by a collective of anarchists from Jura, Black Rose and other parts of the Sydney anarchist community. Would you like to help organise the next one? Jura has called an open meeting to discuss the 2015 bookfair. All welcome. If you can't make it, but want to be involved, email us.
3pm Saturday 13 December at Jura. Facebook event.

New anarchist articles online

Whitlam, Timor, And The Great Men Of History Myth
An excellent short article by Michael Brull. Michael offers a counterpoint to the unthinking hero-worship and great-man version of history which was shoved down our throats when Whitlam died. “Whitlam cannot be remembered without reference to East Timor. His legacy is a reminder that social movements count for more than great leaders… Those who say we don’t have leaders like Whitlam anymore have the truth backwards. The good that Whitlam did was because of social movements and activists who did the important work. Salvation doesn’t come from above. It comes from us.”

Against the far right; against Islamophobia: Rally in Penrith, December 8
An anonymous article published by Slackbastard. It gives a good report and analysis of the anti-fascist action last week, and suggestions for the action this Monday. We'll be there, and we encourage you to join us.

Occupy Sydney 3 year anniversary; all charges dropped
Rhubarb of the Jura Collective, reports on the legal process and congratulates the 11 strong people who stood up for themselves and each other during the last 3 years under threat of conviction. Finally, all charges have been dropped!

Cops disapprove of free speech in Lakemba
A report by Stuart Highway of the Jura Collective on a couple of actions taken by anarchists to show solidarity with the Muslim community, in the face of harrasment by cops and the State.

Irish Anarchist Review #10
The latest issue of this excellent magazine is now online and full of interesting articles. There are pieces on Zapatismo, workplace occupations, market control in Ireland, the accelerationist manifesto, and a review of Caliban and the Witch.
