Thank you and congratulations!

We'd like to thank everyone who came along to the Sydney Anarchist Bookfair, and congratulate the organisers, volunteers, stall-holders, speakers, and performers - it was a great day. We estimate that between 500 and 700 people attended. There were 30 stalls and over a dozen talks (with 20-60 people at each). Hundreds of books were sold, plus zines, t-shirts, vegan burgers, and more. Over 100 new subscribers joined up to this newsletter - welcome. (There are now 1,420 people on this list.) For more reflections on the bookfair, check out this article by Jay and Sid. And let it be known that Sydney's first anarchist bookfair won't be the last!

Future Perspectives for Sydney Anarchism: An Open Discussion
2pm, Sunday 27 April at Jura.
The success of the bookfair demonstrated how great an interest in anarchism there is among many people in this city. As a follow-up to the bookfair, Red & Black Forum is holding an open discussion at Jura for people to contribute their views and discuss ways forward for future anarchist action and activities.
Jura May Day party, from 6pm, Thursday 1 May at Jura.
Live music, and a commemoration of the anarchist roots of May Day. With The Shop Steward, Camilla Hill and more to be announced.
Jura working bee, 12-5pm, Saturday 10 May.
The first of a series of working bees to fix the damaged floor of our upstairs room and remove a wall to make the room larger. All welcome to come and help out!
Other Worlds zine fair, 11am-4pm, Sunday 25 May at Level 3, Central 28 Broadway, Chippendale - an alternative to the MCA's zine fair.
The MCA is sponsored by Transfield, a corporation that operates contracts in the detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru. Transfield derives brand value through its association with the arts. By participating in events that are sponsored by Transfield we add value to their brand. This alternative fair will give zinesters an opportunity to show their protest while still enabling them to sell and swap their zines. An alternative to the MCA zine fair may seem like a small protest, but it’s a specific protest as zine makers, in solidarity with asylum seekers who protest against and resist mandatory detention from within the camps. New anarchist articles online

Sedition is an irregular publication by Jura and the Melbourne Anarchist Club. The aim is to contribute to the discussion of the way forward for anarchism in Australia, in theory and praxis. Issue #2 has just been published. You can pick up a paper copy at Jura for $3, or we can post one (or more) to you - just email us. Or you can read the pdf online for free.

Many of the articles from Sedition are also on the new Jura blogs feed (which you can also subscribe to via RSS if you like). Check out these newly published posts:

New books in the Jura library

The Fanya Baron Library has just received another bunch of great radical books and pamphlets. The books include the recently-published To Remain Silent is Impossible by Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, Cartography of Revolutionary Anarchism by Michael Schmidt, the new Colin Ward reader, and two new books on the role of anarchism in the Spanish Civil War: Ready for Revolution by Agustín Guillamón and 'Anarchism and Workers Self-Management in Revolutionary Spain by Frank Mintz. The library also purchased many pamphlets from our comrades in Wellington, the Freedom Shop, during our recent visit for their bookfair. Come and check it out. More about our library and borrowing.
