Organising Tenants' Struggles

Sydney Solidarity Network Forum this Sunday at Jura

The difficulty of finding good housing in Sydney is something we all know about first-hand. And once you have somewhere to stay, there are lots of issues that mean you may have to leave soon anyway: your landlord not doing repairs, rent increases, or an eviction notice. Members of Sydney Solidarity Network invite you to a discussion about these and other issues to do with housing in Sydney, and what we might be able to do about them. Speakers will include Barney, a public housing resident and activist with the campaign to save Millers Point, and Raf, who has worked as a tenant advocate at a tenants' advice and advocacy service, plus discussion. 2pm, this Sunday 17th August at Jura. Anarchism in Athens

Sunday 24 August: Nick on contemporary Greek anarchism

At this month's Red & Black Forum, Nick will give a talk looking at the contemporary Athenian anarchist and anti-authoritarian milieu and their on-the-ground struggles against capitalism, the state and the rise of fascism. Specifically, he will consider how militant protest actions act as expressions of collective grievance, desire for retaliation against police injustices and as manifestations of anarchist and anti-authoritarian praxis. He willl also explore how varying shades of anarchic tendencies and ensuing ideological and practical disagreements are, for the most part, overcome in these often violent Athenian street-protests.

Nick recently completed a phd at Macquarie University, based on his research in Athens. The talk will be followed by discussion. All are welcome; we'd love you to invite your friends in real life and on Facebook.
2pm, Sunday 24 August at Jura.

Upswell

New online magazine of Australian radical politics and culture

Upswell is a new online magazine which aims to publish a diversity of left-wing perspectives that challenge liberalism and capitalism in an accessible and engaging way. It will be launched this weekend at www.upswellmag.com.

The Upswell Launch Party is this Saturday night with a photography exhibition, and live music by Hence Therefore, Catgut and Golden Orb. 8pm, Saturday 16th August at the Red Rattler in Marrickville. $10/$5

How to Support Gaza

We salute the courageous group of Melbournians who took direct action this morning, occupying the roof of Elbit Systems, Israeli arms company.

To help make sense of Israel's war crimes, we encourage you to check out this new article and interview with Noam Chomsky, insightful as ever.

Older, but also worth checking out is this Institute of Anarchist Studies interview with Palestinian anarchists, and this critique of white anarchists from a Palestinian perspective.

Museum of Squatting

The Australian Museum of Squatting is a great online resource. Recent articles include an old thesis on the Balloon Factory by Jura Collective member Jeremy Kay; and a note on the recent eviction of the Hat Factory - two squatted social centres in Newtown that we loved and will miss.

Help us fix the floorboards

Which have been danced to death

We're renovating the Jura library to make it bigger and better for talks and other events. We've demolished a wall and installed a new beam in the ceiling and have begun to repair the cracked and broken floorboards, which succumbed to the enthusiastic dancing of lovable punks. Come and help us fix them and improve your carpentry skillz! 12-5pm, Sat 6 September.

Melbourne Bookfair Report

Three members of the Jura Collective and two friends from Black Rose made the trip to Melbourne. It was a great day! Congratulations to the organisers. Jura sold almost $1,000 worth of books and we met lots of comrades old and new. Thanks to those who helped make the Jura stall happen - with volunteer time and donations.
