“The Transient and the Permanent"
Rev. Christian Schmidt

The Unitarian minister Theodore Parker proclaimed that though the ways of religion change over time, the central truth does not. This is a core belief of Unitarian Universalism, that our ultimate mission, often expressed as liberation for all or the creation of beloved community, is always our mission, but our means (like using virtual technology!) change over time.

MVUC has a refreshed website just in time for ministerial search candidates to learn about us!

One of the benefits of the new website is that we will be able to shorten the length of these weekly newsletters by using links and pointers to more information on the website.  You can see some initial examples of that below related to flower sign-ups, ride-shares for visitors, our Pastoral Care team, and abbreviated listings of current adult religious education opportunities.

Please take some time to explore the new site and contact siteadmin@mvuc.org if you spot anything that needs to be corrected.

BEYOND CATEGORICAL THINKING (BCT) Workshop
Saturday 11/12/22, 9:00am-12:30pm, in the chapel

Still time to register for and attend the BCT Workshop, which was postponed due to illness.

The workshop is important in the ministerial search process. It will help us keep open minds as we consider ministerial candidates. It will help us consider which candidates would best serve our needs while helping us avoid eliminating candidates because of attributes that do not prevent them from being outstanding ministers.

A light breakfast will be served at 8:15, as well as snacks during the mid-morning break.

Please register to attend here:

Carol Carter Walker, who is Unitarian Universalist Association trained and sponsored, will facilitate our workshop. Carol is an experienced speaker and facilitator with a wealth of knowledge regarding multi-cultural matters and UU Principles. She has been a Unitarian Universalist (UU) since 1987 when she became a charter member of Sojourner Truth UU Congregation in Washington, DC. Carol joined Paint Branch UU Church in Adelphi, MD in 2002. She also belongs to Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism, the Church of the Larger Fellowship, and Diverse and Revolutionary UU Multicultural Ministries (DRUUMM). Carol is currently co-chair of the Central East Region’s Chalice Lighter [Grants] Program Committee; member of the Committee on Ministry for a community minister; facilitator for the UUA Beyond Categorical Thinking Programs; Board Secretary, Sister SoUUrce; and a member of the Black Lives of UU Council of Elders.

Thank You from Buildings and Grounds!

Our Fall Workenanny was Sunday, October 16.  We had volunteers working to clean up our grounds from 9:30am until 3pm.  I wanted to thank all the people who pruned and weeded all around our Holy Hill:  Dick & Sandy Toye, Katherine Fogden, Becky Brandt, Doug MacCleery, Josette Fogden-Hernandez, Brian Lounsbury, Liza, Zlata, & Yeva Pyvovalova, Marty & Anne Bredeck, Steve & Marcus Bogart, Farhat J Chaudhry, Nazia Linters, Nick Marin, Doug Masterson, Margaret Meath. and Shah & Leah Choudhury.  We got a lot done and the grounds look sooooo much better.  (I apologize if I misspelled your name.  And double thanks for anybody I missed.)

For those of you who couldn't make it and would still like to contribute some of  your time to our Holy Hill, there is always pruning and weeding that needs to be done.  You can always pull any vine that is growing up something (wall, fence, tree, bush).  And the beds in front of Hollin Hall and the Meeting House always need weeding.  Even a few minutes of weeding goes a long way toward keeping our grounds looking their best.

Lastly, for those who want to help but just can't -- for whatever reason -- thank you for your love of our Holy Hill.  Maybe next spring.

Leah Choudhury,
The Buildings & Grounds Committee
