Sleep better this year with a bedtime Alexa routine

My bedtime routine is my favorite Alexa sleep trick!

With an easy-to-set-up bedtime routine, Alexa can turn down your lights, close your shades, set the tempenable do not disturb and even open third party Alexa skills like ambient sounds or Headspace for a sleep-inducing meditation -- all upon a single voice command. All you have to do is set up a bedtime Alexa routine that triggers when you say "Alexa, good night." You'll drift off to dreamland as soon as you hit the pillow.

Pro Tip: Want to dim slights slowly starting 30 minutes prior to bedtime? You can now do this easily in an Alexa routine by setting a time ramp (from 5 minutes to 1 hour) for the light to dim to your desired level.

Do This Now: Set up a bedtime routine in 90 seconds

  1. Create a new Alexa routine (tap/click here to see simple step-by-step instructions)
  2. Tap "When this happens" > Tap "Voice"
  3. Enter the phrase you'll use to kick off this routine (for example, "Alexa, good night") > Tap "Next"
  4. Tap "Add action
  5. Choose your actions — such as turning off a smart lightenabling do not disturb or opening a third party Alexa skill such as Headspace
  6. Save your new routine
  7. When you're ready to turn in, just give your voice command to start up your new Alexa routine -- and get to sleep!

People prefer premium whiskey for Alexa-led tastings

Diageo, the British owner of Talisker Scotch whiskey -- and also Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Baileys and Guinness -- launched an Alexa skill in late 2018 to promote the Talisker brand. Their goal was to re-create the tasting experience of people who visit the distillery on the Isle of Skye in Scotland as an Alexa-led “audio journey” that can teach anyone with Alexa how to taste and appreciate Scotch.

Over a year later, an interesting conclusion has surfaced: the tasting experience for the most expensive Talisker 10-year-old Single Malt was chosen most frequently by users of the skill. While you might have expected a lower or mid-range Scotch to win out, it does make sense that people who spend more on their Scotch are more focused on enjoying and appreciating it.
