Smart shades can help you save money this summer

They'll keep things cool so you can run the AC less

My living room gets blasted by the sun every afternoon -- before I installed smart shades, it used to feel like the temperature would rise a full 10 degrees between the hours of 3pm and 6pm. If I didn't have my AC on high, the living room would feel like a greenhouse.

I put in Alexa-connected smart shades last summer and set up a simple Alexa routine that automatically closes them just before the afternoon sun arrives and then automatically opens them a few hours later (so I don't miss the sunset!).

Why I LOVE my smart shades. Not only has it been satisfying to see my AC costs decline (especially after spending money to buy these shades), automatically having the shades close every afternoon is also extremely convenient, plus it saves me the mental load of having to remember to do it myself. It's also fun to control your shades via Alexa commands!

Pro Tip: Another great room for smart shades... the bedroom! My daily Alexa wake-up routine raises my smart shades a few minutes before my Alexa alarm goes off -- it's really nice to wake up as the spring light comes in. And at night, my "Alexa, it's bedtime" routine dims my smart lights and closes the shades :)

Do you have a "greenhouse"-prone room in your home?

Smart shades are a super simple way to make any home more energy efficient -- they're a short-term investment, but they'll save you real money over the long term.

What smart shades should I get? I recommend the Serena Shades from Lutron because they are easy to install and set up with Alexa. Tap/click here for all the info you need to be sure you get the right shades for an Alexa set-up and can easily install them when they arrive.
