You can now just say "Alexa, rename third plug!"
(Insert the default name of your device in place of "third plug.") When Alexa asks you to choose a new name, say "bedside light" or "desk light" or whatever makes sense for you. It's as easy as that!
And once the device has its new, easy-to-remember name, you can say "Alexa, turn off desk light" (insert the name you chose) instead of "turn off third plug" (because who can remember that?!).
Controlling your smart home with your voice really is magical -- but first you have to set things up so you can actually remember what everything is called!
Forgot the default name of the light or plug you want to rename? Open the Alexa app > tap "Devices" on the bottom navigation bar > tap the relevant device type at the top (e.g., "Lights," "Plugs," etc.) to see all the devices listed by name.
Pro Tip #1: If a smart plug controls a light -- such as your living room light -- I recommend renaming it "living room light" because that's easier to remember (and more intuitive) than "living room plug."
Pro Tip #2: The ability to rename smart lights and plugs just by asking Alexa (instead of editing the name in the Alexa app) is brand new! But if you want to rename Echo speakers and smart displays, you still need to do it in the Alexa app (follow the steps in the section below).
You can also easily re-name your smart lights & plugs in the Alexa app
Follow these easy steps in the Alexa app:
- Tap "Devices" on the bottom navigation bar
- Tap the relevant device type at the top (e.g., "Echo & Alexa," "Lights," "Plugs," etc.)
- Tap the light you want to rename
- Tap the settings icon in the upper right corner
- Tap "Edit Name" on the upper right
- Change the name and tap the Done button on the keyboard
