Smart shades will change your life

If you're wondering what's next for your smart home, this is the answer

My Alexa-enabled smart shades are hands-down my favorite "phase 2" connected smart home device. If you've already got the smart lights, plugs and thermostat and want a game-changing smart home upgrade, go for smart shades.

So many reasons I love my Alexa-connected smart shades. It's insanely convenient to automatically close them with a daily Alexa routine that runs just before the afternoon sun blasts my living room (and of course automatically opens them a few hours later!). It's also very nice to be able to open and close all my shades at the same time with simple Alexa voice commands.

Where can I buy smart shades? I have the Serena Shades from Lutron. They were simple to install using the Lutron App and Lutron Caseta Alexa skill. Pricing varies by size and style. Tap/click here for essential buying tips to get the right shades to work with Alexa.

2 more reasons smart shades are even more useful than you thought:

  1. Energy efficiency -- The smart shade / Alexa routine combo will definitely make your home a little more energy-efficient by keeping sun-baked rooms cooler
  2. Increased privacy & home security -- Want to keep your shades down when you're out without having to go from room to room closing all of them? No problem. You can easily create an Alexa routine that closes your shades when you leave home.

Check out this marvelous new smart dimmer!

Leviton smart dimmer
The brand new Decora Smart Voice Dimmer from Leviton is an in-wall dimmer switch with Alexa built into it

That means you don't even need to connect it to an Echo speaker -- or have an Echo speaker in the same room -- in order to control it with Alexa voice commands and routines. You can speak directly to this light switch and access Alexa's capabilities (including controlling other smart home devices and hearing news, weather, music and more!) just as if you were speaking to an Echo. An LED light above the dimmer's switch turns blue when Alexa is listening. Pretty cool!
