2014 HIA Home of the year by Peter Stutchbury and Steele Associates

Multi-Award Winning "Edge House"

Architect: Peter Stutchbury Architecture

Builder: Steele Associates

ACACIA’s timber windows and doors, including sliding windows, sliding doors, and timber clad pivot doors feature throughout the home, which is built on the edge of a 16 foot heritage cliff face on the point of Birchgrove Peninsula in the Sydney Harbour.

The new state of the art home designed by Peter Stutchbury Architecture, forms a unique bond to the heritage sandstone cliff face. The home is partially cantilevered, involving very demanding engineering, by Professor Max Irvine, and built to exacting detail and practicality by Steele Associates.

Design Brief: To create a house that could welcome the owners’ large family in comfort while showcasing the beauty of the Australian hardwood timbers and concrete.

The home comprises of a very large open-spaced sitting and dining room adjoining the kitchen and large outdoor entertaining area which conveniently opens out with ACACIA’s sliding doors. The outdoor entertaining area is complete with its own barbecue,  sink and plenty of space for friends and family. With many large bedrooms, bathrooms and plenty of room for the guests, there wasn’t much left out of this stunning home.

And it just got better, no need for the 100-point turns in the tight cul-de-sac, this home features it's very own turntable. Also featuring a cantilevered pool constructed to hold 50 tonnes of water with glass viewing panels in the side, and the diving board from the cantilevered roof to top it off!
In all these areas, it was paramount that the architect and builder focused on achieving exacting detail, superior sound and airtight qualities, and also the aesthetics needed due consideration. ACACIA were specified and chosen for their expertise in timber window and door manufacture.

The Blackbutt timber windows and doors were finished in a clear coat to embellish the natural character of the native Australian Hardwood.
The sitting and dining rooms are enclosed by walls of timber single-lite sliding doors, that open out to the large outdoor entertaining area.

Within this amazing structure are 30 feet trusses that span over the main living area, finished with timber veneer. Also 20 feet steel cantilevered roof wings, and cantilevered concrete extending 15 feet past the end of the last column.

The Builder and Engineer were faced with many engineering challenges, including the stabilizing of the 16 foot heritage cliff face, steel beams and each concrete floor aligned and cantilevered.

With the walls and floors being concrete final finish, everything from light fittings, shower heads and door hardware had to be installed into the concrete formwork.
The natural timber adds warmth, atmosphere and character to this home built of finish concrete and steel.
